Why Banning HFCS Won't Fix the Food Supply | A Carnivore Economic Perspective on H.R. 10278 Is a government ban on high-fructose corn syrup actually going to s...

It's true that Congress is looking at high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and this brings up a massive dilemma for me, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’m a limited-government, free-market guy. I generally despise government bans. But we have to face reality: corporations have abused their economic freedom, flooding our food supply with a cheap ingredient that is wrecking public health. The biochemistry here is straightforward. Your body cells can burn glucose for energy, but your liver has the primary responsibility of processing fructose. When hit with massive amounts of concentrated HFCS, the liver converts it straight into fat. This is why Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (formerly NAFLD) has skyrocketed over the past few decades. It used to be rare; now it's an epidemic.

However, from an economic standpoint, I doubt a ban would actually curtail sugar consumption. Companies will just switch to standard cane sugar (sucrose), which is still 50% fructose and causes similar metabolic issues if overconsumed. A ban doesn't change demand; it just forces companies to use a different, slightly more expensive supplier.

As someone who values individual responsibility and free markets, I hate the idea of a nanny state banning ingredients. But when corporate irresponsibility creates a massive health crisis that burdens our entire economic and medical system, it makes you question where the line should be drawn.

What do you say?

Things are so much better this way.

Update from David and Cindy.

Many of you may remember last week I asked you to pray for the wife of one of my followers on YouTube who just got a cancer diagnosis. Here’s the most recent update.

“Cindy is back in the hospital. She had to have emergency surgery Monday night into Tuesday morning to stabilize her spine with rods. The doctor was very concerned that the nerve damage might leave her unable to walk again, but thankfully, she was very lucky.

She is getting stronger every day and regaining function, although it’s going to be a slow process. We’re incredibly grateful for the progress she’s making and are taking it one day at a time. Thank you so much for thinking of her and for all of your support.

We really appreciate everyone’s prayers, support, and encouragement for Cindy. ❤️

The butter she is holding is a squeeze toy to help her build up her strength. Lol! She goes into rehab tomorrow and should start cancer treatments next week. Thanks again.”

These difficult times in life challenge our faith more than normal, so I just ask that we continue to lift Cindy and her family up in prayer as they face this trial. I would venture to say David is paraphrasing what his doctor said, but it’s more than luck. Thank you, Lord for your tender mercies.
