✨Today is World Cleft Awareness Day✨ Did you know that cleft lip and/or palate is one of the most common birth differences worldwide, affecting approximately 1 in every 700 babies? It occurs very early in pregnancy when the tissues that form the lip and/or palate do not fully fuse together. While the exact cause isn’t always known, genetics and environmental factors can both play a role. A cleft is so much more than what you see on the surface. Many individuals undergo multiple surgeries throughout childhood and may also face challenges with feeding, speech, hearing, dental development, and self-confidence along the way.
