Here is some very interesting facts about the nail plate that Doug Schoon posted. I have included the link to”the post at the bottom. The following is a copy and paste. I have only added the quotation marks and the link, nothing else.

“Is the nail plate porous? It's NOT a yes or no question. Many nail techs believe the nail plate is either porous or it isn't. The truth is more interesting and revealing.

The nail plate is "selectively porous". It is porous to some liquids, but not to others.

Porosity isn't an on/off switch. It's a range, from high porosity to low porosity to none at all. Where a particular liquid falls within this range depends on the liquid itself.

Four things determine how easily and how deeply a substance can pe*****te the nail plate:

The Size (aka molecular weight)The ShapeThe Polarity (determines how water soluble it is)The Concentration
Large, bulky molecules may enter the nail plate, but they get stuck near the top surface. Smaller molecules with a long, snake-like shape can travel further, especially if they are water soluble.

If a molecule has the right size and the right shape, is water soluble, and is applied in high concentration, it could pass completely through the nail plate. But this is pretty uncommon and only applies to a few water soluble substances in relatively high concentrations. Mostly, these molecules just pe*****te deeper before becoming trapped in the twisted maze the nail plate puts in their path.

Even when the first three are right, a very low concentration means too few molecules enter the nail plate for any meaningful amount to make it all the way through. The few that do enter become trapped in the maze.

Water is by far the fastest and most freely penetrating substance.

Nothing else moves through the nail plate as easily, especially when soaking, since the concentration of water molecules is very high.

So the next time someone asks whether the nail plate is porous, the correct answer is, "Porous to what?"

Please share this information widely with your nail friends”

I have posted this article before but I thought I’d post it again in case anyone missed it. There’s a lot of well meaning, but wrong advice out there. Buffing the nails to remove ridges is not a good thing. I have ridges on most of my nails, some worse than others. I always apply a sticky base coat and 2 layers of a ridge filler and my ridges don’t show through even creams.
If you have ridges, how do you deal with yours? i have been using a ridge filler called Fillin’ Groovey and love it for it’s more accurate name as well as the color. It isn’t white, but rather a nice very slightly pink color, but a nice slightly pink. Not a pink, pink.
if you do not have ridges, I’m slightly envious, but still love you. 😂😂

Question of the Day-Makeup or None?

I haven’t worn any kind of makeup on my skin in decades, so no foundation, powder, nothing. However, if I go out of the house, I almost always wear eye makeup. The only exception is during the summer when I have to walk the dogs for an hour. It’s hot here, so no point in putting it on when I’ll just sweat it off. I do wear waterproof mascar, but it only works so well. I wear eye makeup to the gym, even though I am exercising. They keep it cool and I bring a towel. Even if the makeup runs a bit, which it doesn’t, I’d still look better with that without. One reason I wear makeup to the gym is my eyelashes and eyebrows are very light in color, so invisible. If I’m going to put on mascara and do my eyebrows (if I’m industrious, I’ll dye them), I might as well put eyeshadow on, right? 😂

How about you-makeup or none?

Effects of Water Part 3

Water absorption affects the physical properties of the nail plate, making it temporarily more flexible and less brittle. However, excessive moisture can weaken the plate making it too soft and overly flexible. Water absorption also causes slight swelling of the nail plate, increasing its thickness temporarily.
This happens when water fills in between the cell layers, it pushes them slighty apart. Water also acts like an internal lubricant between the layers making the plate more flexible. This temporary swelling can cause microscopic cracks to grow and become larger.

Hello Blissettes’s! Here is something Doug Schoon posted on his website I thought you would all be interested in. This is a copy and paste. I haven’t subtracted anything and have only added the quotation marks. Below is the link to his post.

“ It's an old myth that just won't go away. Some incorrectly claim that the nail plate is porous, so the ingredients in traditional nail polish soak through it and get into the body. Where is the proof? There isn't any. This idea gets repeated because it sounds plausible, not because anyone has measured it.

The nail plate is a dense, highly cross-linked keratin structure, roughly 100 times thicker than the outer layer of skin. It forms a tight barrier. It's not a sponge.

The strongest evidence against the myth comes the pharmaceutical industry, which has spent decades trying to drive antifungal drugs through the nail plate to reach the nail bed underneath. They have largely failed. Even when these topical nail treatments include "pe*******on enhancers", or when the nail plate is filing down the thin, these medications still perform poorly. So, if drugs formulated with pe*******on enhancers still can't get through, polish ingredients that were never designed to pe*****te the nail plate, certainly won't.

Traditional nail polish (aka lacquer or enamel) dries by solvent evaporation, leaving behind a film of nitrocellulose, resins, plasticizers, and pigments. These film formers are large polymers, far too big to pass through the nail plate under any conditions. They are not going anywhere. It's time for this silly myth to stop being taught.

So my question for anyone who repeats this, where is the study? Show me an actual measurement demonstrating that these substances cross the nail plate in a meaningful amount. Until that exists, this is nothing more than folklore, repeated by those who don't understand the facts.”
