**June Rodriguez deserved justice. What he got was a system that failed him.**
And Larry Krasner needs to answer for that.
A 17-year-old allegedly struck and killed June Rodriguez, left the scene, and remained gone for nearly a month before turning himself in. He was charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, leaving the scene, and other offenses.
And throughout this process, we kept hearing about the defendant's **bright future in basketball**.
But what about **June's future?**
June had a future too.
He had family. Friends. A career. A community that loved him. More birthdays. More holidays. More nights DJing. More memories that his family should have been able to make with him.
**That future was taken away.**
So here's what I believe Larry Krasner should have done:
**He should have aggressively prosecuted the case to the fullest extent the law allowed. He should have pursued every appropriate charge supported by the evidence. He should have fought for consequences that reflected the seriousness of June's death, the alleged decision to leave the scene, and the alleged effort to conceal what happened. And he should have made June and his family's loss just as important to this process as the defendant's rehabilitation and future.**
Yes, the defendant is 17. Yes, rehabilitation matters.
**But accountability matters too.**
You cannot keep talking about a teenager's bright future while barely acknowledging that June Rodriguez's entire future was taken from him.
June doesn't get rehabilitation.
June doesn't get a second chance.
June doesn't get to come home.
**June is dead.**
And his family has to live with that for the rest of their lives.
So don't ask June's family to simply accept an outcome that feels completely disconnected from the magnitude of their loss.
**Larry Krasner, your job is not only to protect the future of the accused. Your job is also to seek justice for the person who is no longer here to speak for himself.**
June deserved a prosecutor who would fight for him.
**His family deserved a prosecutor who would fight for them.**
And if this outcome doesn't reflect that, then Larry Krasner needs to explain **why.**
**Because June Rodriguez's life was worth fighting for.**
