Ginger & Maude offers hair services and haircare products in a welcoming environment, with a focus on promoting and supporting inclusion and the well-being of our customers, employees and community. Our hairstylists give customers personal attention in our boutique hair salons, and provide expert hair services: haircuts for all hair types, balayage color, foilyage color, highlights, babylights, scalp treatments, and more. We have multiple locations and extended hours so we are available when and where you need us.
Ginger & Maude Hair Salons has long been a more earth-friendly hair salon. After all, we consider the Earth to be a major stakeholder in our business, and as North America’s first B Corp™ certified hair salon brand, we believe that businesses have both a responsibility and an opportunity to address the climate crisis. We have done this through a number of actions, including:
-Becoming certified sustainable through our partnership with Green Circle Salons, which allows us to recycle and recover the majority of our beauty waste, including used foils, color tubes, excess hair color, hair clippings, and hard-to-recycle plastics.
-Selecting an environmentally conscious hair product line—KEVIN.MURPHY—for use in the salons, as well as environmentally conscious hair salon supplies where possible.
-Implementing eco-conscious changes within the salons (for example: using smart thermostats, reusable towels and bidets in the restrooms, and salon spray nozzles that reduce water and energy consumption by up to 65%).
But to us, being a sustainable hair salon also means continually finding ways to improve. We’re not perfect, and we are always looking to do better. This year, we created a Climate Action Plan to identify areas for improvement and outline our goals for those areas. As part of this, we’ve just completed an audit of our current recycling processes to ensure we are properly recycling as much as we can through our local recycling program and our partnership with Green Circle Salons. Following our Climate Action Plan, we can ensure we are continuing to make progress and do our part to take care of our planet.

The NAYA Family Center was founded in 1974 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1994. They serve “self-identified Native Americans, infant to Elder, from across the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area.” NAYA’s mission is “to enhance the diverse strengths of our youth and families in partnership with the community through cultural identity and education.” To learn more, follow NAYA Family Center

What is it like to operate to own a salon day-to-day?
“Operating a salon day-to-day is a unique experience. It’s a job with many hats. You know, just making sure the general maintenance and management of the salon is running well, but mostly, just trying to be here for everybody to make sure they’re all happy and doing the best that they can with the best that they have.”
What is it like for a working mom?
“Being a working mom is really hard; it doesn’t matter what job you have, it’s always hard to balance your kids and your job and make sure that you are showing up for both in a way that’s meaningful. But I will say that, owning the salon, I have a lot more balance than I did in my life before. In the beginning, it was very busy and I was working a lot of hours here, but they got to be here with me a lot of the time. They helped me tear down walls and they helped paint. I got to be there this morning when they were sick and came in later in the day and still be here for my employees. If I need to follow up on something, I can do a lot of that from my office, but I can also do a lot of it from home, so it’s a lot more flexible now than it’s ever been.”
