Enhancing recovery from acute injury, EIMD, and DOMS is a major goal of athletes and coaches. It is implied that since cryotherapy reduces the inflammatory response, it therefore promotes recovery. However, evidence on the effectiveness of cryotherapy as a valid recovery modality following intense training and competition is inconsistent. In fact, there is significant evidence demonstrating that ice therapy delays the bodyâs natural response to injury, decreases anabolic hormones, and can actually decrease performance.

đĽśCold water immersion (CWI) is becoming increasingly popular. You can even say it has a somewhat cult following. In this day in age, itâs really easy to jump on a bandwagon blindly. Unquestionably take others advice or recommendations without really understanding the underlying mechanisms, validity, or how it applies to you in your situation. Especially in the health and wellness space where everyoneâs an âexpert.â There is so much information readily available it can be difficult to know whatâs accurate and whatâs just, popular. Context is everything. So, what is actually occurring here? Are there real physiological benefits or is it all a placebo? Is timing important?
