Indigo Salon Red Wing

As we approach Season 8 of the Hope and Harbor Overnight Shelter, it’s important to remember where we started. ❤️

In the early fall of 2019, Pastor Marc Eix of First Covenant Church - Red Wing, Pastor Greg Boldt of First Presbyterian Church Red Wing, Minnesota, and Pastor Justin Boeding of United Lutheran Church met at the home of Jack Norgaard. Jack had a long history of working to house people experiencing homelessness in Red Wing, and Pastor Marc brought an idea from a previous congregation that he believed could work here.

That meeting was the beginning of Hope and Harbor.

During that first season, local congregations were asked to host guests. Volunteers moved mattresses and supplies from one church to another, provided dinner and hospitality, handled check-in, and spent the night at the shelter.

Before there was staff, a resource center, a Community Care Fund, or an organization as we know it today, there was simply a group of people who saw a need and decided to do something about it.

The first season was completed entirely through volunteers—people giving their time, churches opening their doors, and neighbors helping neighbors.

That spirit is still at the heart of Hope and Harbor today.

As we prepare for Season 8, we are incredibly grateful for the pastors, congregations, volunteers, donors, and community members who said yes in 2019 and to everyone who has continued saying yes ever since.

Eight seasons later, the work continues—and it all started with a few people believing that our neighbors deserved a safe place to sleep. ❤️
