Back in the days of wooden ships and iron men, the Royal Navy began issuing citrus juice to its sailors to prevent scurvy during long voyages. Eventually, the British became known as “Limeys,” a nickname that stuck long after the sails came down.

Historians have long debated what Judas was actually reaching for during The Last Supper. Most scholars insist it was bread, wine, or perhaps a money bag.

They are wrong.

Recent, completely fabricated research has revealed that Judas was trying to swipe the last bar of J.D. Bauer Botanicals soap.

According to absolutely no surviving Renaissance documents, Leonardo da Vinci was a huge fan. He supposedly kept a bar in his studio because “paint comes off the hands much easier when your soap has standards.” (Jesus was also said to be partial to it, which explains why Judas was willing to risk everything for one bar.)

Da Vinci, ever the detail guy, allegedly hid the soap in plain sight in an early version of The Last Supper before church officials told him, “Leonardo, this is getting ridiculous.”

The detail was later painted over.

Fortunately, we have restored history.

According to a completely unreliable art-history rumor, Johannes Vermeer was obsessed with J.D. Bauer Botanicals soaps.

He reportedly refused to finish Girl with a Pearl Earring until someone brought him a bar. “The light is wrong,” he supposedly muttered. “The composition is wrong. Also, this studio smells like 1665.”

One wash with JD Bauer Botanicals later, inspiration struck.
Vermeer polished the pearl, adjusted the lighting, painted like a madman, and allegedly said, “At last. A masterpiece worthy of this soap.”

Historians have never been able to verify the story, mostly because J.D. Bauer Botanicals would not exist for another 350 years.
We consider that a minor technicality.

In the Medieval Period I had an ancestor who tried to get into the soap business. It’s a sad story.
