Most of us know that morning sunlight is important for circadian health, but evening light is just as essential.

As the sun sets, the gradual shift in light intensity and color spectrum provides your brain with a powerful signal that the day is coming to an end. Specialized light-sensitive cells in the retina relay this information to the brain’s master circadian clock, helping regulate the timing of melatonin release and other hormones involved in sleep, metabolism, and recovery.

Even 10–20 minutes outdoors around sunset can help reinforce a healthy circadian rhythm, making it easier to fall asleep, improve sleep quality, and support more stable energy throughout the following day. Nature’s light cycle is one of the most powerful tools we have for keeping our internal clock in sync.

Udwarthanam is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal body treatment designed to awaken the body from the outside in. Using a customized blend of finely ground herbs, this invigorating therapy is performed with rhythmic, upward strokes to stimulate circulation, encourage healthy lymphatic flow, gently exfoliate the skin, and leave the body feeling lighter, more energized, and deeply refreshed.

Traditionally, Udwarthanam has been used in Ayurveda to support healthy metabolism, reduce feelings of heaviness, improve skin tone and texture, and complement wellness goals related to body composition. Many clients enjoy it as a supportive therapy for promoting circulation, reducing water retention, and encouraging the body’s natural detoxification processes.

The New Moon in Cancer arrives on Tuesday, July 14 at 5:43 AM EDT, inviting us inward.

Cancer, ruled by the Moon, reminds us that growth begins where we feel safe enough to soften. This lunation is an opportunity to reconnect with your intuition, tend to your emotional landscape, nurture your home, and plant intentions that support the life you truly want to build.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, this New Moon unfolds during the height of Summer, the season of the Fire Element. While the energy of the season is expansive and outward, this moon offers a gentle invitation to balance that intensity by nourishing the Heart and Shen (spirit), honoring rest, and creating space for emotional renewal.

This carousel explores:
• The energetic themes of the Cancer New Moon
• Simple rituals for intention setting and reflection
• Seasonal TCM foods, herbs, and practices to support your body and spirit throughout Summer

May this New Moon remind you that the strongest foundations are built not through force, but through presence, nourishment, and trust in your own inner wisdom.

☼ COOLING FOODS FOR SUMMER ☼

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is governed by the Fire element—a season of warmth, growth, movement, and abundant Yang energy. While this outward energy supports vitality and connection, too much internal heat can leave us feeling overheated, restless, irritable, dehydrated, or mentally scattered.

Rather than relying on iced foods and beverages, which TCM believes can dampen digestive fire, the focus is on incorporating cooling foods and herbs that naturally help clear heat, replenish fluids, and restore balance from within.

Seasonal foods like cucumber, watermelon, pear, celery, mung beans, lotus root, seaweed, snow fungus, chrysanthemum, mint, and barley have traditionally been used to help:

• Clear excess heat
• Support hydration and replenish body fluids
• Promote healthy digestion during warmer months
• Calm the Heart and soothe the mind
• Reduce feelings of irritability and restlessness
• Nourish the skin and support healthy circulation

One of the foundational principles of TCM is living in rhythm with nature. As the seasons shift, so should the foods we eat. Choosing fresh, seasonal ingredients is a simple yet powerful way to support your body’s natural intelligence and align with the energy of summer.

Remember, TCM is highly individualized. Your constitution, health history, climate, and current season of life all influence what foods are most supportive. If you tend to run cold, experience digestive weakness, or are postpartum, your ideal summer diet may look different.
