3 mistakes I made as a new microblading artist—and what I do differently now.

1. Working too deep
Stroke depth is everything. When I first started, I was going too deep because I thought deeper strokes would give me better retention. In reality, working too deep can cause blurred strokes, scarring, and poor healed results. Learning the correct pressure and depth completely changed my work.

2. Spending too much time trying to create perfectly symmetrical brows
I used to overthink brow mapping and try to make both brows perfectly identical. But a face is naturally asymmetrical, so forcing perfect symmetry onto it can actually make the brows look less symmetrical, because both side of the face are almost always different. I still measure and carefully plan the shape, but I focus more on balance, facial structure, natural hair growth, and what looks right on the client—not making the brows exact copies of each other.

3. Not fully understanding color theory
Choosing a pigment is about so much more than picking a brown that looks pretty in the bottle. You have to understand skin tone, undertone, existing brow color, pigment temperature, and how that color will heal over time. Color theory is one of the most important parts of creating soft, natural-looking healed brows.

These are lessons that took time, practice, and plenty of healed results to truly understand. Microblading is not just about creating beautiful brows the day of the appointment—it’s about knowing how they will look once they are healed.
