Hello everyone! Wild Hippie here with an organic chemistry meme!
What kind of bonds are present are essential to helping identify the organic compound. That’s why there are three typical word endings to describe the bonds in the compound:
- “-Ane” refers to a compound with only single bonds present
- “-Ene” refers to a compound where one or more double bonds are present. This meme refers to a “Diene” which means a compound with two double bonds and a “Triene” which means a compound with three double bonds.
- “-Yne” refers to a compound with one or more triple bonds.
-There’s a whole naming system to describe where in the compound the double or triple bonds are! The organic compound naming system means that someone who knows it should be able to draw the compound’s structure from the name alone, or name the compound from seeing the structure.

Hello everyone! Wild Hippie here with another science meme!
-As mentioned in previous posts, organic chemistry is the study of carbon and carbon-based compounds. It gets its own field of study because carbon follows highly specific rules.
It’s called “organic” because all life on earth is carbon-based. However, we now distinguish organic chemistry from biochemistry because there are carbon-based compounds and reactions that aren’t necessarily associated with life.

Happy Monday everyone! Wild Hippie here with another science meme!
-In Organic Chemistry, hexagons are used to represent a six-membered carbon ring known as “Cyclohexane”. “Cyclo” refers to the ring structure, and “Hexane” refers to six carbons in the structure, without any double bonds.
-In the image, we see a variant of this hexagonal structure that is commonly known as “Benzene”. While cyclohexane lacks double bonds, Benzene has three double bonds distributed throughout the ring as depicted. (Fun fact: how the double bonds in Benzene works is actually a more complicated story, because of the complexities of electron sharing within the carbon-carbon bonds. This is why they’re so extensively studied in organic chemistry!)
-Benzene and Cyclohexane are common structural motifs found in more complex organic and biological structures. Many organic chemistry courses will devote quite a bit of time to making sure students understand its properties!

Hello everyone! Wild Hippie here with a science meme and a bit of genetics history!
-James Watson and Francis Crick are usually credited with the discovery of DNA structure, but the story behind that discovery is a bit of a complicated one!
-Watson and Crick used what was known about DNA structure, physics, and chemistry in order to create a model of the structure.
-Rosalind Franklin and her colleague Maurice Wilkins used a method called X-Ray crystallography, using X-rays to create images of the crystallized structure of DNA. Wilkins shared their findings with Watson and Crick, including the famous image known as “Photo 51” which was used to determine the double-helix structure of DNA.
-Watson and Crick would receive the Nobel Prize for this discovery. In their famous paper, a bit of credit was given to Wilkins and Franklin for their X-ray images. Unfortunately, Franklin would pass away from cancer before the award was given, and according to Nobel Prize policy she could not be awarded posthumously.
-Some argue that this reflects how women in science were treated in the early-mid 20th century, and is part of a larger debate about women in science generally. Besides that, it has also sparked debate about how people are properly credited for their roles in discovery. But what do you all think? Did Franklin and Wilkins deserve the credit just as much as Watson and Crick?

Hello everyone! Wild Hippie here with another science meme!
-Why we get a fever when we’re sick is a question with a bit of a complicated answer, and scientists are still working out all the complexities!
-Most systems in our body operate best at the temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because if the temperature is too high or too low, it can destabilize certain enzymes and cell systems.
-However, during an illness the immune system will cause the body to heat up. The current theory usually points to higher temperatures attempting to destabilize the bacteria or viruses that are invading. There also may be evidence that the higher temperatures lead to immune system cells working more efficiently.
-There is of course a trade off: While it may destabilize the infection or encourage immune cells, fevers can be dangerous for body systems. This is why it’s important to balance things: letting the immune system do its job while also minimizing any “collateral damage” to healthy cells.

-In ancient times, Greek and Latin were the languages of the “civilized” world. And in the days of the Roman Empire, Latin became a common language that connected all the nations that were a part of it.
-This trend extended to the Middle Ages! Latin and Greek became the languages of math and science. Universities during this time even used Latin as a common language to connect students from different countries. Even to this day, this linguistic system helps scientists from all around the world to communicate the same ideas.
