Hey night owls! Frank has late appointments on Thursday evenings. How does a massage right before bed time sound?

What are your thoughts? I want to add some more whimsy to sessions, since I don't do scents, would anyone be interested in a glitter/shimmer oil add-on? I'm thinking on mixing my own with jojoba, which means it could also look nice in hair without making it greasy if i get the mix right 😁. I'd be using a skin safe, biodegradable brand.

While the practice has always been fragrance free, I'm making some changes to better serve folks with skin sensitivities- starting in August I'm switching to using jojoba oil for bodywork and hydrogen peroxide sanitizing wipes. As always, reach out if you have any questions 😊

Pain and tension are stubborn. So am I. Here's how I got that way.

I turn one today.

I received my massage therapy license on July 21, 2025. A lot can happen in a year.

Starting a business two months after licensing wasn't my first choice. I left a stable nonprofit job to help launch a massage business with a friend and become a therapist myself. Feeling muscle textures came naturally to me, and my love of solving puzzles drew me to therapeutic work. But my vision diverged from the business I helped build. It was time to go.

I had a job offer and had just put myself on the schedule when it was walked back. I can’t say with total confidence what happened, but here’s what I do know, I don't pander to anyone. I've been called stubborn. Insubordinate. The mantra of my professional life has been “Do no harm, but take no sh*t”, from immigration and labor rights to consent education and domestic violence advocacy. Those experiences make me the therapist I am. If I can't figure out a problem, I don't throw up my hands, I get to work. If I don't think I'm the right practitioner for an issue, I say so. I am mindful of boundaries, as much for my clients as for myself. I speak up.

Being in a helping profession doesn't mean being a people pleaser, it means doing what is best for the client, and those two things aren't always the same thing. And that's not always the best thing for the bottom line in the short run, but integrity pays dividends in the long run. This I know to be true. A year out, I wear rejection as a badge of honor. I earned it.

Fed up with workplace dynamics and fueled by spite, I pivoted. A room I found on Craigslist last October became Resonance Therapeutic Massage. A slow winter schedule was an opportunity to pilot an adapted massage technique designed for people with touch trauma or sensory issues who've been kept from the benefits of massage.

Substitute teaching on slow days reminded me how much I love teaching, and this fall I'm returning to my alma mater to teach massage. 7 out of 10 clients return. That’s a pretty good retention rate. I've already taken double the continuing education needed for license renewal and I'll keep going, because I love this job. I also haven’t killed any office plants yet!

I didn't build this alone. I have a small but mighty support system, including my co-founder Frank, who took his licensing exam alongside me, got his license on the same day, and helped launch Resonance from the ground up. He'll be on the schedule Thursdays starting in August, and he takes later evening appointments. He's my massage therapist, try him out!

What keeps me going isn't just stubbornness. I genuinely love this work. Anatomy is endlessly fascinating. I haven't stopped learning with the enthusiasm of a kid at a science museum. There's always a puzzle, always something I don't know yet that I want to.

And my clients. I want to say this clearly: every single person who has trusted me with their pain, their recovery, their body… I don't take that lightly. Not one session. They have been patient, collaborative, dedicated, and kind, and they are the whole point. I've seen over 100 different people in that little room. I have genuinely enjoyed working with every single one of them. And I started this whole thing with a very low opinion of humanity.

The events of the last year have left their mark. I have a shorter fuse and a sharper tongue. But when you're a woman working alone in a room with strangers, that's the armor you need. The same attributes that got doors slammed in my face opened new ones. I don't give up easily. Not on myself, not on you, not on the work.

Thanks for being along for the ride so far. It's been a year, and I hope to have you with me for the next 25. It only gets better from here.

SCHEDULING CHANGE: Starting in August, I will be moving to a Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat schedule. It's getting busy (yay!). If you see me regularly, I suggest establishing a standing appointment, feel free to reach out 😊.

Y'all know most of the books in my office are aspirational, right? Like maybe if enough people ask about them I'll get the 🔥lit under my... *self* and read them. So many books, so little time.

Did you know that FSA/HSA cards are accepted here? Now you do. 😄

Am I working on the 4th? You better "be-leaf" it! And I love out-of-towners, so if you want to get someone out of your house for an hour or two... 🤣
