The thing about women and aging that no one really tells you, is that all of a sudden, you just aren’t SEEN anymore when you walk into a room. YOU FEEL INVISIBLE. The thing about Gray Hair that no one really tells you is that IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE QUIET, blending past recognition. It can be BOLD. It can be ELEGANT. It can be DRAMATIC. C’mon, lady— let’s turn some heads, again!
Meet Lisa, features\d above.
Lisa & I have done it ALL! In the past 15 years (or so), we have taken Lisa from a bright blonde to a casual bronde, and then later from subtle gray blending to bold grey enhancement.
She has that sort of grey that sits on the fence between grey, blonde, and brunette— we call it GREIGE. And we celebrate it!
One side contains much more white than the other…so for a long time we were just low lighting the light side to make both sides appear even (this is called Grey Blending or Grey Balancing). At one point, I mentioned that we could expand the brightness by adding more silver blonde to the natural white, “money piece” brightness in the front. Lisa took the idea let it simmer a while.
You see, Lisa is a professor; she always has eyes on her. That can feel vulnerable. After a particularly rough health episode, Lisa decided to REALLY shift her image before fall classes started. She gave me the direction:
“I like my grey, but I want a younger version of my grey... Is something like that possible? I am I asking for the impossible? Did you say we could do something bolder in the front?? ”
My response: “YES, Lisa. YES, I DID.”
[insert my giddy face and a little happy dance]
I took the green light and RAN WITH IT. We lightened and enhanced until we got that dreamy Greige, Money Piece effect.
While blending set up does require some extra time and planning, we really only do 1 big “marathon appointment” each year to re-set that blonde with fresh highlights. The rest of the year, we meet do low maintenance grey blending and grey toning on the days that she’s due to a cut (2hr appointments every 10-12 weeks).

Watching our team build thriving businesses and welcoming so many new faces through our doors has been one of the greatest joys of this year. I’m incredibly proud of each stylist and the care they bring to every guest who sits in their chair.

Our goal is low maintenance grey coverage; we use a sheer color to turn the natural white pieces into blonde highlights without significantly changing the depth of the base color.
In the top two frames you can see the SOFT, natural regrowth after 12 weeks growth. YES. I SAID TWELVE.
Notice that there is NO harsh line when her roots come in.
On the bottom left, you can see how natural and shiny her finished color appears. It’s a slightly darker blonde and the fading happens mostly between weeks 8-12.
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Life it good.

Grey Transformations can happen slowly or in a couple loooong sessions. I posted this video to really help you see that Phase 1 IS THE HARDEST hump to get over, especially if you are transitioning from a solid dark color to a natural white root. It’s expensive and we are starting at the furthest from our end goal. Remember, we are undoing YEARS of color retouches. Rome wasn’t built in a day… nor was it dismantled in a day. 😉
In my experience doing transformational grey journeys, ONLY 50% of people move forward after PHASE 1 …. So, budget accordingly AND prepare your heart & mind. PLAN to PUSH THROUGH, friend. I’m with you each step if the way.

🙌 THIS is the sweet spot, friend.
This is when some opt to go 100% Natural. Others love the refinement of dimensional grey pieces against their natural base. We call this Grey Enhancement.

Theresa ultimately loves her long hair.
Why did she choose to cut it all off?? … because Color Removal with Bleach (Phase 1) KILLS the integrity of the hair. We tried to keep it.
We did treatments - we did THE WORKS… but, really, grey/white hair is extra dry and curls are delicate.
You can’t remove (bleach) all those years of color away and expect to have the same look/feel of your regular curl pattern. It will be pretty dull/lifeless, if it doesn’t break. We were actually able to preserve her length BUT the the curl quality was such a sad, lifeless, wave (total loss of spring factor), that Theresa asked for a “BIG CHOP”… haha that is literally the social media term for a Major Length removal in order order to start over with healthier hair.
From that day forward, we never touch her hair again with bleach lightener. We went “No Bleach Grey Blend” aaaaaalll the way, Baby!
