Today, I received a phone call that reminded me why paying attention to the smallest details matters.

About a month ago, a client came in for a Head Spa service that had been gifted to her by her husband. During her treatment, I noticed an area on her scalp that looked unusual. When I gently worked around it, it began to bleed. I explained my concern and encouraged her to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist—not because I knew what it was, but because it wasn’t something I felt should be ignored.

Today, she called to tell me that it was basal cell carcinoma, and she is now scheduled to have it removed.

As aestheticians, we are not doctors and we do not diagnose. However, we spend time closely examining our clients’ skin, scalp, and overall skin health. If something doesn’t look quite right, speaking up could make all the difference.

To my fellow aestheticians: Never be afraid to kindly recommend that a client have something evaluated by a medical professional. Your observation could lead to early detection.

To my clients: Please don’t be alarmed if your aesthetician points out something of concern. Most of the time, it turns out to be nothing serious—but if it is something, early detection can be life-changing.

Skin cancer doesn’t always appear where you expect it. The scalp is often overlooked, making routine checks even more important.
