"Sometimes I’d find myself lying paralyzed on the couch for hours, just scrolling through my life as it passed me by. Over the past few years, without really noticing, my phone had quietly started to take up more and more space in my life. It crept in so slowly that I didn’t even see it happening.
My girlfriend and I would wake up in the morning, lie in bed together, and scroll for half an hour, sometimes even an hour. Without saying a word, we’d just send each other videos. Pretty grim when you think about it.
At some point she said, “Let’s just delete everything.” So about a month ago, we both deleted all our social media accounts. And honestly, it feels amazing. I can finally be bored again. It’s strange how much I’d missed that. My mom used to say, “Being bored is good for you.” I used to hate that, but now I think she was right. When you’re bored, suddenly there’s room again for new thoughts and ideas.
People today are so focused on what they’re missing on social media. You see everything all day long: what events are happening, how everyone else is living their lives. And somewhere along the way, you forget to live your own. Your insecurities triple, and you don’t even realise it's because of that smartphone. You see people with better jobs or nicer vacations. But really, it doesn’t matter. You just have to live your own life.
The other day I went out for dinner with my best friend. And again, it sounds almost sad that this is even worth mentioning, but we talked the entire time without once looking at our phones. You stop expecting stimulation from that little screen. I suddenly felt human again.
I want to live in the real world, with real people. Surrounded by music and real conversations. I got my first smartphone when I was in eighth grade, which is kind of crazy when you think about it. I think I’ve come out of it okay, but sometimes I see little kids in strollers holding iPads and I think: this just isn’t it."
