Please help me name this chatty guy - male DMH
This little guy needs a name that flows well with his companion cat, Margo. I lean towards human names and short 2 syllables max.
Names that can’t be used - Rocky/Rocco, Gus, Leo, or Hammy.
He’s very chatty, playful, and affectionate. He has some cute little tufts of fur behind his ears that remind me of rockhopper penguins.
Thanks everyone!

My boyfriend told me I was cruel for shaving my elderly cat because his fur kept getting matted. Then he invited his family over to see what I had done, and now everyone is treating me like I abused the animal I've spent years caring for.
I never thought giving my cat a haircut would turn into the biggest argument of my relationship.
I've had my black cat for almost eleven years. He was already an adult when I adopted him, so I don't know exactly how old he is now. He's always had beautiful, thick, long black fur. People used to joke that he looked like a tiny lion sitting on the windowsill.
But over the past year, things have changed.
He doesn't groom himself the way he used to. His back legs are stiff, and he struggles to reach certain parts of his body. I brush him every evening, but the fur around his stomach and hindquarters started getting tangled faster than I could manage.
At first, I tried everything.
I bought different brushes, detangling sprays made for cats, and special grooming tools. I spent hours carefully working through little knots while he sat on my lap.
Eventually, the mats became too tight and uncomfortable for me to remove safely.
Our veterinarian recommended having him professionally clipped rather than trying to cut the mats out myself.
So I booked an appointment.
When I brought him home, he looked completely different.
His body had been clipped short, but the groomer left his fluffy head, paws, and tail. He looked like a little black lion wearing an oversized winter hat.
I laughed when I first saw him, not because I thought he looked ridiculous, but because he was still my beautiful boy, just with a very unusual haircut.
More importantly, he seemed comfortable.
He could stretch without pulling at tangled fur. He started grooming himself again in places he could reach. That evening, he climbed onto my bed and sat beside me while I watched a nature documentary on my laptop.
It was the most relaxed I'd seen him in weeks.
Then my boyfriend came home.
He took one look at the cat and asked what I had done to him.
I explained everything about the matting, the veterinarian's recommendation, and the grooming appointment.
He didn't want to hear it.
He said I'd humiliated the cat.
He said animals weren't fashion accessories and that I had no right to change his appearance just because I was too lazy to brush him.
That last part really hurt.
My boyfriend knows how much time I spend caring for this cat.
He has watched me brush him every evening. He's seen me clean up after him when his stomach is upset. He knows I've paid for veterinary appointments, special food, and medication without ever asking him to contribute.
But suddenly, I was being accused of neglecting him.
I tried to explain that shaving wasn't my first choice. It was something a professional had done because the mats were becoming a welfare issue.
My boyfriend told me I was making excuses.
Then he took pictures.
I thought he was just sending them to a friend because the haircut looked unusual.
I found out later that he'd sent them to his mother and sister, telling them I'd shaved the cat because I couldn't be bothered to take care of his coat.
The next evening, his mother called.
She sounded genuinely upset.
She told me that animals depend on us to protect them and that I should be ashamed of treating an elderly cat like a toy.
I explained that the groomer had removed painful matting on veterinary advice.
She said there was no excuse for making an animal look like that.
Then she asked whether I had considered giving him to someone who had more time to care for him.
I couldn't believe it.
This cat has slept beside me for more than a decade.
I've stayed awake with him when he was sick. I've rearranged my work schedule to take him to appointments. I've spent money I was saving for holidays because he needed treatment.
And now someone who barely knows him was suggesting I shouldn't own him.
I told her the conversation was over.
My boyfriend was furious.
He said I'd been disrespectful to his mother and that she was only concerned about the cat's wellbeing.
I asked him why he'd told her I shaved him out of laziness when he knew that wasn't true.
He said it didn't matter why I did it because the result was the same.
Then he told me something that genuinely shocked me.
He said he'd invited his mother and sister over that weekend so they could see the cat for themselves and help me understand why what I'd done was wrong.
I told him absolutely not.
My cat was not going to be put on display so his family could judge me.
He accused me of being defensive because I knew I'd made a mistake.
That night, I slept in the spare bedroom with my cat curled beside me.
I kept looking at his little black face and the short fur on his body, wondering how something that had clearly made him more comfortable had somehow become evidence that I didn't love him.
The next morning, my boyfriend sent me another message while I was at work.
He said he'd been researching grooming and that cats could become stressed after being shaved.
He wanted me to admit I'd made a terrible decision and promise never to do it again.
I told him I would always follow professional veterinary advice when making decisions about my cat's health.
He said that wasn't good enough.
When I got home, I found him sitting in the living room looking annoyed.
He told me his family thought I was being stubborn and that he couldn't understand why I wouldn't simply apologize.
I asked him what exactly I was supposed to apologize for.
For taking my cat to the vet?
For paying a professional to remove mats that were hurting him?
For making sure an elderly animal could move comfortably?
He said I was twisting everything to make myself look like the victim.
That's when I finally lost my patience.
I told him that he had taken a private decision about my cat's medical care, deliberately misrepresented it to his family, and then encouraged them to question whether I deserved to keep the animal I'd raised for eleven years.
He went quiet.
Then he said I cared more about being right than about our relationship.
I told him this had never been about winning an argument.
It was about trust.
If he was genuinely concerned, he could have asked to speak with the veterinarian. He could have come to the appointment. He could have listened when I explained why the grooming was necessary.
Instead, he chose to embarrass me in front of his family.
And somehow, I was now expected to apologize for being upset.
It's been several days, and things are still tense.
My boyfriend says he'll drop the subject if I admit that shaving the cat was wrong.
His mother has sent another message saying she hopes I've learned something from this experience.
Meanwhile, my cat has been doing exactly what he always does.
He eats his breakfast, naps in his favorite spot, and follows me around the house.
Yesterday, I set up my laptop on a little wooden tray so we could watch a wildlife documentary together. He sat beside the screen, staring at a mouse running through the grass, completely fascinated.
I looked at him and realized that he doesn't care whether his fur looks beautiful to other people.
He just needs to be comfortable, safe, and loved.
And I know I've given him those things.
What I can't understand is why my boyfriend would rather make me look like a terrible pet owner than acknowledge that he might have misunderstood the situation.
Now I'm questioning something much bigger than a haircut.
If he can turn a decision made for my cat's wellbeing into a public accusation against me, what happens when we disagree about something more serious?
**Am I wrong for refusing to apologize for having my elderly cat professionally shaved because his fur was badly matted? Or is my boyfriend the one who crossed the line by involving his entire family and accusing me of mistreating an animal I've loved and cared for for more than a decade?**

My sister told me I should give her my cat because her daughter has been crying for one just like him. When I refused, she told our entire family that I was choosing an animal over a little girl's happiness. Now my parents are demanding that I make things right.
I never thought I would have to defend my right to keep a cat I've loved for years, especially against my own family.
My cat is a white-and-gray tabby with enormous green eyes, a pink nose, and a habit of sitting perfectly upright with his tail wrapped around his paws. He's the kind of cat who looks like he's listening carefully whenever someone speaks to him.
I've had him for five years.
I adopted him during one of the hardest periods of my life, when I was living alone after a difficult breakup. I wasn't looking for a pet at the time. A friend had been helping a neighbor find homes for several kittens, and I agreed to meet them.
He was the quietest one.
While the others climbed over each other and chased toys, he sat in the corner watching everything.
When I picked him up, he pressed his little face against my neck and started purring.
I brought him home that afternoon.
Since then, he's been with me through two moves, a job loss, the death of my grandmother, and countless nights when I didn't want to be alone.
He's not just a decoration in my apartment. He's part of my everyday life.
My sister knows all of this.
She has an eight-year-old daughter who absolutely loves animals. Whenever they visit, my niece spends most of her time sitting near my cat, trying to get him to play.
He's gentle with her, but he's also shy. When he's had enough attention, he walks away and hides somewhere quiet.
I've always taught my niece to respect that.
A few weeks ago, my sister called and asked whether I would consider giving him to her daughter.
I thought she was joking.
She explained that my niece had been begging for a cat and that she specifically wanted mine because she already knew him.
I told her I would happily help them find a kitten or adoptable adult cat, but mine wasn't available.
She went quiet.
Then she asked why I was being so selfish.
I laughed awkwardly because I genuinely didn't know how to respond.
She said I lived alone, worked long hours, and probably wasn't giving him enough attention anyway.
According to her, a house with children would be a much better environment for him.
I reminded her that he's happy, healthy, and extremely attached to his routine.
She told me I was making excuses.
I ended the conversation thinking she'd eventually realize how unreasonable the request was.
I was wrong.
That weekend, we had dinner at my parents' house.
My niece ran up to me as soon as I arrived and asked when I was bringing her new cat over.
I froze.
Apparently, my sister had already told her that I was thinking about giving him away.
My niece had picked out a bed, a food bowl, and several toys.
She'd even decided where he would sleep.
I looked at my sister, who was standing behind her with an expression that made it clear she expected me to go along with it.
I gently explained to my niece that my cat was staying with me, but that I would love to help her find a cat of her own.
She immediately started crying.
My sister rushed over and accused me of breaking her daughter's heart.
In front of everyone.
She said I could see how much the little girl loved him and that refusing to give him away was unnecessarily cruel.
I asked her why she'd promised her daughter something that didn't belong to her.
She said she'd assumed I would do the right thing.
My mother stepped in and suggested that maybe I should consider it.
She said children form special bonds with animals and that my niece would probably benefit more from having a cat than I would.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
I asked my mother whether she'd expect someone to give away their dog just because another family member wanted it.
She told me not to be dramatic.
Then my father said something that has stayed with me ever since.
He said I could always get another cat.
As though five years of companionship could be replaced by visiting an animal shelter and choosing a similar-looking one.
I told them I wasn't discussing it anymore.
My sister started crying.
She said I was making her look like a bad mother because she'd promised her daughter something she couldn't deliver.
I told her that wasn't my responsibility.
She accused me of caring more about an animal than my own niece.
That was the moment I decided to leave.
For the next several days, my phone was filled with messages.
My mother said I should apologize to my sister for embarrassing her.
My father suggested I could give my niece the cat temporarily, just to see how things worked out.
My sister sent me pictures of the cat supplies she'd already purchased.
Then she sent me a message saying my niece had been crying herself to sleep because she couldn't understand why her aunt wouldn't share.
I felt terrible for the little girl.
But I also felt angry that the adults around her had created this situation and were now expecting me to fix it by surrendering my pet.
Then things got worse.
Last Saturday, my sister showed up at my apartment with her daughter.
She hadn't called beforehand.
When I opened the door, my niece was holding a small pink cat carrier.
My sister explained that they'd come to pick him up for a weekend visit.
I told her no.
She said it was only for two nights and that I was being ridiculous.
I explained that my cat gets anxious in unfamiliar places and that I wasn't comfortable sending him away.
She rolled her eyes and told her daughter that I apparently didn't want to share.
My niece started crying again.
I felt like the worst person in the world.
But I didn't change my mind.
I asked them to leave.
That evening, my mother called and told me she'd never seen my sister so upset.
She said families were supposed to make sacrifices for one another.
I asked why the sacrifice always seemed to involve me giving up something I loved.
She didn't answer.
Instead, she said I was damaging my relationship with my niece over a cat.
I've spent the past few days thinking about that accusation.
Because I do love my niece.
I would help her with school, babysit when needed, buy her birthday presents, and support her in any reasonable way I could.
But I don't believe loving a child means teaching her that she can have anything she wants simply because she cries hard enough.
And I don't believe being an adult means my attachments are somehow less important.
Yesterday afternoon, I came home and found my cat sitting on his favorite glass-topped cabinet beneath a framed picture.
He looked up when I walked in, blinked slowly, and waited for me to come over.
I scratched behind his ears, and he leaned into my hand the way he always does.
He has no idea that an entire family is arguing over who deserves to keep him.
He doesn't know that my sister thinks he's a present I should hand over.
He just knows this is his home.
And I'm the person who has cared for him every day for five years.
My sister is now refusing to speak to me until I apologize to her daughter.
My parents say I should be the bigger person and find a compromise.
But I don't know what compromise they're expecting when the only thing my sister wants is my cat.
**Am I wrong for refusing to give my beloved cat to my eight-year-old niece, even though she's devastated? Or is my sister the one being cruel for promising her daughter an animal that was never hers to give away, then making me the villain for saying no?**

Name my cat please. I have gone through so many names but can’t find one that suits him.

Little black cat name ideas - bonus if it’s a food related name!
What would you name her?? She’s super sweet and playful. Bonus points if it’s a food name!

My boyfriend told me to get rid of my cat because she keeps hiding in the bathroom. Then I discovered what he was doing to her whenever I wasn't home, and now he's accusing me of destroying our relationship over an animal.
I never imagined I would have to choose between the man I thought I was going to marry and a cat who has never done anything wrong.
I've had my black-and-white cat for four years. I adopted her when she was still a kitten, shortly after moving into my first apartment. She has always been a little shy around strangers, but once she trusts someone, she's the sweetest animal you could ever meet.
She sleeps beside me every night, follows me into the kitchen, and waits outside the bathroom door whenever I take a shower.
For years, she was completely comfortable in my home.
Then my boyfriend moved in.
We had been together for almost three years, and moving in together seemed like the natural next step. He knew how much my cat meant to me. He had visited my apartment hundreds of times and never complained about her.
At first, everything seemed normal.
But after a few weeks, I noticed she was spending more and more time hiding.
She stopped sleeping on the couch. She wouldn't come into the living room when my boyfriend was watching television. Sometimes I would come home from work and find her crouched in the corner of the bathroom, pressed against the tiled wall with her tail wrapped tightly around her body.
Whenever I approached her, she would stare at me with those enormous green eyes.
I thought she was struggling to adjust to having another person in the apartment.
My boyfriend had a different explanation.
He said she was a weird cat who had always been antisocial. He complained that she left hair everywhere, scratched the furniture, and made the apartment smell.
Then he started suggesting that we should rehome her.
I told him absolutely not.
She was my responsibility long before he moved in, and I wasn't going to abandon her because he found her inconvenient.
He accused me of putting an animal before our future together.
I thought he was being dramatic.
I didn't realize how much worse things were.
A few months ago, my cat started refusing to eat whenever my boyfriend was home. She would wait until he left the apartment before approaching her food bowl.
Sometimes she would flinch when he walked past her.
I took her to the veterinarian because I was worried she might be sick. After examining her, the vet explained that stress or fear could be contributing to her behavior, although we needed to watch for other symptoms.
I came home and told my boyfriend we needed to make the apartment feel safer for her.
He laughed.
He said I was spending money on a cat that was obviously just being difficult.
That should have been my first warning.
But I loved him, and I kept convincing myself that he simply didn't understand animals.
Then last Thursday, I came home early from work.
I usually don't get home until after six, but a meeting was canceled, so I left the office a couple of hours early.
When I opened the apartment door, I heard my boyfriend yelling.
At first, I thought he was talking on the phone.
Then I heard something hit the bathroom floor.
I walked down the hallway and found him standing in the doorway while my cat was crouched behind the toilet.
She looked terrified.
He had been trying to force her out of the bathroom because he was tired of finding her there.
When I asked what was happening, he told me she had scratched him and he was teaching her a lesson.
I asked why he was yelling at her.
He said she needed to learn that she couldn't do whatever she wanted.
Then he admitted that whenever she hid in the bathroom, he would chase her out, clap loudly near her, and spray water toward her to make her move.
He said he'd been doing it for weeks.
I felt sick.
For months, I'd been wondering why my affectionate little cat had become frightened of her own home.
For months, I'd been paying veterinary bills, buying calming products, and trying to figure out what was wrong.
And the entire time, the person I trusted most had been deliberately frightening her.
I asked him how he could do that to an animal who had never hurt him.
He said I was exaggerating.
He insisted he hadn't injured her and that spraying a cat with water wasn't abuse.
Then he told me that if I had trained her properly, he wouldn't have needed to discipline her.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
He wasn't apologizing.
He was blaming me.
I picked up my cat and carried her into the bedroom. She buried her face against my chest and stayed there while I tried to calm down.
When I came back into the living room, I told him he needed to leave.
He stared at me like I had lost my mind.
He asked whether I was seriously ending our relationship because he sprayed a cat with water.
I told him it wasn't just about the water.
It was about the fact that he'd been frightening a defenseless animal behind my back, watching me worry about her, and pretending he had no idea why she was behaving differently.
He said I was choosing a cat over a human being.
I told him I was choosing not to live with someone I couldn't trust.
He packed a bag and left that evening.
Since then, my phone hasn't stopped ringing.
His mother called me and said her son had made a mistake but didn't deserve to lose his relationship over it.
His sister told me that plenty of people discipline their pets and that I was treating him like a criminal.
Even one of my friends suggested that I should have given him another chance because he hadn't physically injured my cat.
But I keep thinking about how she looked when I found her in that bathroom.
The way she pressed herself into the corner.
The way she wouldn't move until I picked her up.
And the fact that I had been leaving her alone with someone she was terrified of every single day.
What bothers me most isn't that my boyfriend didn't like my cat.
Not everyone loves animals. I understand that.
What bothers me is that he knew how much she meant to me and still chose to treat her that way when he thought nobody was watching.
Yesterday, I found her sitting in the bathroom again.
She was curled up beside the wall, looking at me with those same big green eyes.
I sat on the floor a few feet away and waited.
After a while, she slowly walked over and rubbed her head against my hand.
It was the first time she'd approached me on her own in days.
I almost cried.
My boyfriend has now sent me a long message saying he wants to come home. He says he'll never spray her again and that I'm throwing away three years of love over something that could easily be fixed.
Part of me misses the relationship we had.
But another part of me wonders how I could ever trust him alone with her again.
**Am I wrong for ending a three-year relationship because my boyfriend secretly frightened my cat whenever I wasn't home? Or is the way someone treats a helpless animal when nobody is watching exactly what tells you who they really are?**

My sister told me I should get rid of my cat because he's too fat to live a normal life. Then I found out she'd been secretly feeding him extra food for months, and now she's blaming me for his weight.
I never thought a cat lying on the back steps would be the reason my sister and I stopped speaking, but here we are.
I've had my fluffy boy for almost six years. He's a beautiful cream-colored cat with dark ears, a huge bushy tail, and the kind of personality that makes everyone fall in love with him. He's always been affectionate, a little lazy, and absolutely obsessed with food.
When I first adopted him, he was a healthy weight. He loved chasing toys around the living room, climbing onto furniture, and following me everywhere. He was never particularly athletic, but he was active and happy.
Things started changing when my younger sister moved in with me last year.
She had lost her job and needed somewhere to stay while she got back on her feet. I told her she could use my spare bedroom without paying rent until she found something stable.
At first, everything was fine.
She loved my cat. She called him her little nephew, bought him toys, and constantly sent pictures of him sleeping in ridiculous positions.
I thought it was sweet.
What I didn't realize was that she had started giving him extra meals whenever I wasn't home.
I work long shifts, so I usually feed him before leaving and again when I return. I measure his portions because our veterinarian previously warned me that he was gaining weight too quickly.
My sister knew this.
I even wrote down his feeding schedule and stuck it to the refrigerator.
But apparently, she decided he looked hungry.
She started giving him extra dry food in the afternoon. Then she began sharing little pieces of her meals with him. Eventually, she was buying treats and hiding them in her bedroom.
I had no idea.
Over several months, I noticed that he was getting noticeably heavier. His belly became rounder, he stopped jumping onto his favorite windowsill, and he spent more time sleeping.
I took him to the vet.
The veterinarian explained that he was significantly overweight and needed a carefully managed weight-loss plan. We discussed his food, portion sizes, and ways to encourage gentle exercise without putting too much stress on his joints.
I came home worried.
My sister acted concerned too.
She told me I needed to stop spoiling him and take his health more seriously.
That comment bothered me because I was already following the feeding instructions we'd been given.
I couldn't understand why he kept gaining weight.
Then something happened that made everything worse.
A few weeks ago, my sister posted a picture of him lying on his back across our wooden outdoor steps. His fluffy belly was completely exposed, his paws were hanging in the air, and he looked like he didn't have a single worry in the world.
I thought the picture was adorable.
My sister apparently thought it was an opportunity to embarrass me.
She captioned it with a joke about how I'd turned my cat into a furry bowling ball because I couldn't stop feeding him.
People started commenting about his weight.
Some laughed. Others said he looked dangerously overweight. A few accused me of neglecting his health.
My sister replied to several comments, telling people she'd been trying to convince me to put him on a diet.
I was furious.
I asked her why she was publicly making me look like an irresponsible pet owner when she knew I was working with our veterinarian.
She told me I was being sensitive and that people were just concerned about the cat.
Then she said something I haven't been able to forget.
She told me that if I couldn't keep him healthy, maybe I should consider finding him another home.
I asked her what she meant.
She said he deserved someone who would take his weight seriously.
I reminded her that I was the one paying for his veterinary appointments, buying his prescribed food, and trying to help him lose weight.
She rolled her eyes and said that clearly wasn't working.
A few days later, I finally discovered what had been happening.
I came home early from work and heard my sister talking to my cat in the kitchen.
When I walked in, she was filling his bowl with dry food.
He had already eaten his measured breakfast.
I asked her why she was feeding him again.
She froze.
Then she said he had been crying and she couldn't just let him starve.
I opened the cupboard and found several bags of treats I hadn't purchased.
When I questioned her, she admitted she'd been giving him extra food almost every day since moving in.
She said he always seemed hungry and that she felt sorry for him.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
For months, I'd been wondering why his weight wasn't improving despite following the feeding plan.
For months, she'd watched me worry about his health.
And the entire time, she'd been secretly undoing everything I was trying to accomplish.
I asked her why she hadn't told me.
She said she didn't think it was a big deal.
Then I brought up her social media post.
I asked how she could publicly criticize me for overfeeding my cat when she was the one secretly giving him extra meals.
She got defensive.
She said I was still responsible because he was my cat and I should have noticed what was happening.
That was the moment I lost my patience.
I told her that I trusted her in my home. I trusted her around my pet. And instead of respecting a simple feeding schedule, she'd ignored it and then made me look like the villain.
She started crying and accused me of caring more about my cat than my own sister.
I told her this wasn't about choosing a cat over a person.
It was about trust.
She knew he needed to lose weight. She knew excessive feeding could make his health worse. She knew how worried I was.
And she did it anyway.
I told her she needed to find another place to live.
She called our mother immediately.
Now my family thinks I'm being unreasonable.
My mother says my sister was only trying to be kind to an animal she loves. She says giving a cat extra treats isn't worth destroying a family relationship.
My sister has been telling everyone I kicked her out because she fed my cat.
But that's not the whole story.
She ignored medical advice, lied to me for months, publicly embarrassed me, and then refused to take responsibility when I discovered the truth.
Meanwhile, I'm the one sitting with my cat, trying to help him get healthier.
Yesterday, I found him stretched across the wooden steps again, belly in the air, completely relaxed.
I took a picture.
He looked so peaceful, and for a moment I almost laughed.
Then I remembered that the same innocent picture had been used to make me look like someone who didn't care about his well-being.
He doesn't understand any of this.
He just knows he loves food, sunshine, and sleeping in ridiculous positions.
And I love him enough to make sure he gets the care he actually needs, even when that means saying no to those pleading little eyes.
**Am I wrong for telling my sister to move out after discovering she'd secretly been overfeeding my cat while publicly blaming me for his weight? Or should I forgive her because she claims she was only trying to make him happy?**
