We had our Council Meetings last week. Links to the videos and additional information are in the first comment of this post.

I don't typically talk much about the Work Session, but there was an interesting discussion about Via Ferattas and possibly having one installed in Santaquin Canyon. Now, that canyon is federal land, so we don't really have much control over what happens up there, but a former State Senator, Jacob Aderegg, is looking to build a Via Feratta and the mayor did suggest taking a look at the canyon as a possibility. Take a look at what they are and let us know if you think that would be a fun addition to area.

In the Regular Meeting there were two Resolutions, both had to do with Wildland Fire and the State. The first Resolution is an agreement with the State that really just says if we do all we can to fight wildfires in the area, the State will contribute to the fight, too. The second is a participation commitment agreement with the State. Simply put, the State assesses the wildfire risk in the area and charges the City a fee. The fee this year is $8,558 dollars, which is about half of last year's fee.

I also don't typically address what is said in the reports, but there were a couple of things the Mayor brought up that I thought would be good to be shared. First of all, the redesign and construction of the 244 I-15 Interchange have been funded. Over the next year the design will be finalized and construction should start next spring and be completed, hopefully, by Fall 2028. That includes extra lanes under the bridge, better design for flow of traffic throughout the interchange, and even extra lanes on I-15 from Payson down to Juab County. Construction will be tough, but once it's finished, we should see improved traffic flow on Main Street.

Also, the mayor heard a report on Fox 13 last month that he thought he'd share with us - link in the comments. There is currently only one ship in the US Navy that is named after a Utah city, and that is the USS Santaquin (see image.) It's a tugboat, has been used in multiple locations, has participated in SEAL Training, and is currently in use at Guantanamo Bay. In the story, they spoke to locals at Santaquin Barbershop for their perspectives. During which time Barber Ben suggested that the City should have some sort of plaque to acknowledge the USS Santaquin. The Mayor is currently working on that.
