This photograph is a companion to the image I previously shared of two sisters and their chicken. Here, the younger girl appears on her own, proudly holding a kitten outside the family home in rural Virginia during the early 1900s.
The original glass negative was heavily damaged, and for years I passed it by because I didn't think it could be restored to a level I was happy with. Revisiting it with newer restoration tools allowed details of this quiet moment to emerge once again.
Sometimes the photographs we almost give up on become the most rewarding.
