To some clients, less is more. They want to look like themselves — just with a little effortless polish. Respecting both a client’s comfort level and preferences while still bringing artistry into the makeup is such an important part of my work.

For this newborn session for .armitage photography, the goal was uber natural makeup that would photograph well without looking “done.”

✨ Lifted and brightened the complexion primary and white/pink adjusters
✨ Added warmth back strategically with .us contour and a warmer foundation on the high points of the face
✨ Used a brow pencil to softly place freckles across the forehead and nose for a natural sun-kissed effect
✨ Defined the lash line with a taupe pencil instead of harsh dark liner
✨ Added subtle demi lashes + dark brown mascara for soft definition
✨ Focused on skincare prep and finishing powders to create that healthy glow in natural light and flash
✨ Kept lips natural with a slightly overdrawn shape
✨ Balanced and softened the brows with brow pencils for more symmetry
✨ Finished with subtle contour using

No-makeup makeup is still glam — it’s just quieter 🤍

Breaking “rules” 👀

1️⃣ You don’t always have to use orange just because it’s opposite of blue. On blue-gray eyes, a dusty rose can be very flattering. When the eye color itself is muted, choosing a muted shadow creates harmony instead of harsh contrast. Plus, a summery or glam bronzey look didn’t really fit the bill here.

2️⃣ Red hair doesn’t automatically mean warm everything.
Yes, red hair carries warmth, but if the skin reads cool-neutral, layering only warm tones can be a bit much. For this client, I mixed cool, neutral, and soft warm tones in the brows and eyes, for example.

Color theory isn’t limited to complimentary colors only, it’s about relationships.
• Eye color
• Skin undertone
• Hair warmth
• Value and chroma
• Lighting + camera
• Client style

The colors I choose, often custom blended, creates balance while bringing out a client’s best features. The result reads effortless because the color story is harmonious.

Full glam can be timeless, too ✨

Makeovers are always a collaboration. My kit is filled with pro products that work across skin tones, ages, and lighting situations — but when a client brings favorites they love, I’m happy to incorporate them if they fit the color story and photograph beautifully.

For this headshot, she wanted more of her eyeliner, more pink blush, more bronzer, and more mascara. Headshot makeup doesn’t have to be minimal; it should reflect the identity and brand of the person in front of the camera.

This shoot was especially meaningful as it celebrated her health journey. Seeing yourself in a new light hits different. It was a privilege to be a part of the transformative process.

The chef’s kiss was using hair power to fill in the hairline and part to add fullness that can be lost in camera.

Place blush higher than you think! Focus on the upper part of the cheeks above the cheekbone to sculpt and lift. I used a cream blush with a small duo-fiber brush for control and softness.

To bring out the blue in her yes, I used muted soft peach tones and a terra cotta blush to tie in with her outfits.

I love doing makeup that enhances instead of covers. No trends. Just foundational corrective beauty makeup.

What a coincidence that I had back-to-back senior portrait shoots and the clients wanted a similar messy, wavy high bun look. .armitage shot a second look with her hair down, so I paid extra attention to defining the curls and using French u-shaped pins so they were easy to take out. The client had a LOT of hair and an existing natural wave that complimented the style well. Glorious!
