After more than 20 years behind the chair, I’ve witnessed something I can only describe as “hair dysmorphia.”

Not as a clinical diagnosis, but as a very real pattern.

It’s when someone can no longer see their hair clearly.

They focus on one strand, one curl or one tiny imperfection that nobody else notices. They bring inspiration photos that their natural hair cannot realistically reproduce. They ask for volume but don’t want fullness, smoothness but don’t want to lose curl, dramatic change but don’t want anything to look different.

The goalpost keeps moving because the real problem was never technical.

Body dysmorphia is real and serious. While “hair dysmorphia” is not an official diagnosis, our relationship with our hair can still become deeply distorted by childhood criticism, bullying, aging, comparison and the belief that being beautiful makes us more worthy of love.

What looks like vanity may actually be fear.

Fear of aging.
Fear of being judged.
Fear of losing control.
Fear that without perfect hair, you won’t feel like yourself or be enough.

Then the salon appointment carries an impossible amount of emotional weight. The client isn’t simply hoping for beautiful hair. She is hoping the service will make her feel younger, safer, desirable or finally comfortable in her own skin.

When it doesn’t heal that deeper feeling, the disappointment may be directed at the hairstylist—even when the service was performed correctly and the result matched the consultation.

A hairstylist can change your color, shape and texture. We can listen, educate and help you feel beautiful.

But we cannot create a hairstyle powerful enough to undo years of rejection, criticism or low self-worth.

Sometimes what needs to be transformed isn’t the hair.

It’s the way you have learned to see yourself

When someone tells me they’re afraid to let anyone touch their hair, I don’t take that lightly. I listen. I ask questions. And I make sure they feel heard before I ever begin.
