A silk press is a method of straightening natural hair without permanently changing the curl pattern.
When done correctly, the hair should return to its natural curls after shampooing. The goal is smooth, silky hair while maintaining the integrity of the curls.
A healthy silk press starts with proper cleansing, conditioning, heat protection, and controlled heat.
If your hair struggles to stay straight, feels dry afterward, or doesn’t revert back as expected, the issue may not be the silk press itself it may be the technique, heat level, or the condition of the hair.

At first, the techniques felt unfamiliar. By the end, she was able to recognize the difference between a French braid and a cornrow and put the correct hand movement into practice.
Learning a new skill takes patience, practice, and repetition.

Believe it or not, this style started with simple cornrows.
The hair was braided flat to the head, allowed to dry, then taken down and shaped into this soft braid-out style.
Learning foundational techniques like cornrows and French braids opens the door to creating a variety of natural hairstyles. Sometimes the simplest techniques create the most versatile results.
That’s one of the reasons I enjoy teaching these skills.

One reason why your hair could still feel dry…You try oils.
You try all sorts of things. And your hair still feels dry.
Sometimes the issue may be that the hair is not being cleansed on a regular basis, especially if product is layering on top of product on top of product.
A moisturizing shampoo may not always be enough to remove buildup.
Try using a clarifying shampoo first, then follow with a moisturizing shampoo.
Clean hair behaves differently.

Starting June 20, I’ll be bringing classes back, beginning with a Cornrow + French Braiding Class.
This class was created because a client asked me if I would teach it, and it made me realize that if one woman is asking, there may be others wanting to learn too.
This class is designed for moms, women wanting to learn self-care, those caring for curly or biracial hair, and anyone wanting to learn how to cornrow or braid their own hair.

One thing I notice with gray natural hair is that it can look dry on the surface even when curls are still present.
The goal wasn’t to create curls.
The curls were already there.
My focus was saturation, product placement, and making sure the strands stayed evenly coated so the hair could respond better during the wash and go curl set.
Even when gray hair looks dry on the surface, the curl pattern can still be present.
Today was about helping those curls show up again.
