I want to start this post by saying that my intention is not to bash any other nail techs. I’ve made these mistakes myself plenty of times, and I know that sometimes these things aren’t always easy to recognize right away. I’m sharing this as an opportunity for education for both nail techs and clients, with the hope of bringing more awareness to what may contribute to discomfort during a nail appointment.

I sometimes notice this when working with new clients, especially when removing old product and prepping their natural nails. There can be several reasons why nails may feel sore, tender, or unusually hot during a service. In some cases, this may be related to over-filing around the cuticle area, too much pressure being applied to the natural nail plate, or repeated friction during prep. Everyone’s natural nails are different, too! Some people naturally have thinner or softer nails, which may make them more sensitive to filing. The type of nail bit being used, its grit, the amount of pressure applied, and the technique used can also play a role in how the natural nail responds. I’ve also noticed this with some clients who have had previous services involving sanding bands. Sanding bands can be a useful tool when used appropriately, but depending on the grit and technique, they may be too abrasive for certain areas of the natural nail. The cuticle area, in particular, requires a gentle touch, and even small differences in pressure or angle can make a difference.

So, why am I sharing this?

I want both nail techs and clients to understand that excessive heat, soreness, or discomfort during a nail service shouldn’t be something we automatically dismiss as normal. If you experience these sensations, it’s okay to speak up and let your nail tech know. Your service provider can pause and assess what may be causing the discomfort.

As a nail tech myself, I am always learning, refining techniques, and finding ways to better care for clients’ natural nails. And as clients, having a little more knowledge about nail health can help you feel more comfortable asking questions and advocating for yourself. 🤍

September is Su***de Prevention Month, a month where I’m especially loud about mental health, taking care of yourself, and reminding people that it’s okay to ask for help. This month holds a very deep meaning for me, as I’ve unfortunately lost a few people I held near and dear to my heart.

I’ve struggled with my own mental health, and I still do, especially after the loss of my mom. I also grew up with a mom who struggled with BPD, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation after going more than 40 years being misdiagnosed.

I’m incredibly thankful that she taught me from a young age that mental health wasn’t something to be ashamed of or a taboo subject. I’ve been in that place myself, where it felt like giving up was the only solution to the problems I was facing.

So this is your reminder: you are loved. You are appreciated. You matter. And you are never as alone as you may feel sometimes. Take it minute by minute, hour by hour, and day by day. You don’t have to have everything figured out right now.

Please check in on your friends and family. Be kind to the people around you, and remember to be kind to yourself, too. Never be afraid to help someone you care about connect with professional support.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. It’s free, confidential, and available 24/7.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911.

For Veterans and Service Members, call 988 and press 1, or text 838255 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

You never know what someone may be silently carrying. A simple “How are you doing?” could mean more than you realize. 🤍

with love 🤍
