Have you ever been really excited to try a new product because it has all of the great active ingredients that you've been seeing online and reading about, only to be disappointed when within a few days you start breaking out? 😠 Well instead of immediately throwing that product in the trash, let's consider if your skin is truly breaking out or maybe just purging. 🤔
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Products with active ingredients such as AHA's (Glycolic Acid), BHA's (Salicylic Acid), Benzoyl Peroxide, Enzymes, and Retinoids can often cause your skin to purge when first introduced into your skincare routine. This means they are working! These active exfoliants cause an increase in cell turnover which means new skin cells are developing faster and pushing dead cells and impurities to the surface.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Skin purging can look like a breakout but usually, it is milder and clears up quicker. There are a few things you can do to get through that purging period:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) Back off on the use of the product. Try using it every 2-3 days until your skin gets used to the new ingredients.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) Don't pick! This can often make things worse and irritate your skin even more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3) Try using a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment like Glymed's Blemish Control No. 5. This will oxygenate the pores, reducing bacteria and clearing the skin.

If your skin doesn't clear or continues to get worse then it may be time to find an alternative product.

Although it's not always pretty, skin purging is not a bad thing! It's how you know that your skincare products are working and in the end, you will see healthier and clearer skin! 🙌🏻
