Your low back client keeps coming back. You've worked the QL, the erectors, the glutes — and it keeps tightening right back up.

Let me introduce you to a muscle that may be running the show: the psoas.

They call it the muscle of the soul — a nickname from the somatic world that stuck because so many bodyworkers recognize something in it. Anatomically, it's one of the few muscles that connect the spine directly to the leg — it runs from the lumbar spine, through the pelvis, to the top of the femur. Every step you take, it's involved — and many bodyworkers also notice how it ties into breathing patterns.

But here's what massage school skimmed over: the psoas is one of the places stress can live in the body.

In the fight-or-flight picture, this is one of the muscles that can tighten as the body curls inward to protect itself — or gets ready to move. And when the stressful season never really ends, for some clients it just… stays. Tight. Braced. Guarded.

That may be part of why your client with the "tight low back" never fully releases. Sometimes we're working the back of the house while the front of the house is still holding tension.

And here's the mind-body piece: grief, fear, burnout, years of pushing through — bodyworkers have long felt the body can hold those things in the psoas. This is one of the places that seems to remember what the mind tried to move on from.

So what do you do with it? In my experience, forcing it doesn't work. Slow work. Breath. Stillness. The kind of touch that gives the nervous system a chance to settle.

Next time that low back won't stay released, stop asking what's wrong with your technique — and start wondering what their body may have been bracing against.

PSOAS I was saying…
Save this for your next stubborn low back client. 💜

What if pain isn't always about the muscle?

These therapists are learning to read the nervous system — because stress doesn't show up the same way in every body. That's the magic of somatic work, and it's what we're bringing to Idaho, October 2-3. Only 2 spots left. 🚨

Her skin's protective shield vanished! She tackled boundary issues, and her eczema cleared up completely. This session proved incredibly powerful.

The person on your table isn't an anatomy chart. They're a whole person with a mind, emotions, memories, beliefs, and stress patterns. Understanding this is key.

I didn't set out to become a somatic educator.

I got here because I kept watching practitioners — myself included — burn out while doing everything "right." Great technique, packed schedules, all the CE hours. And still, something was missing.

It wasn't a better technique. It was understanding what the body was actually responding to.

This is the foundation of everything I teach now. Comment or DM 'SOMATIC' to learn more.

It's the most powerful somatic body work someone has experienced. As a practitioner, this is why I love giving and receiving it – and teaching it to you. When you're regulated on the table, your clients are too, and everything shifts.

Deveney Bellard completed training in somatic bodywork and nervous system regulation techniques and is now offering this work to clients.

Somatic bodywork helps create space for the body to release tension, process stress, and move toward a greater sense of ease and regulation.

This is the kind of work that people often don't realize they need until they experience it.

Your nervous system works hard every day. A somatic bodywork session can help support the rest and regulation it deserves.
