For the girlies who hold it all together....

🧴 Asking if you need moisturizer under your makeup is like asking if you need soap under your clothes.

No. You wash your body. Then you get dressed.

You do your skincare. Then you put on your makeup.

One of my biggest beauty-industry pet peeves is when I hear people talking about a moisturizer they can "wear under makeup."

As a 3rd-generation beauty lover and professional who grew up being taught how to take good care of your skin, the first time someone asked me for a moisturizer she could wear under her foundation, I was genuinely confused.

🤔 What other option is there?

Are we putting moisturizer OVER our makeup now?

Eventually, I realized they're actually asking whether a moisturizer will make their foundation slide around, pill, separate, or look greasy.

Which no moisturizer should ever do anyway if it's the correct formula for your skin type and you're exfoliating regularly.

But the wording reveals a much bigger problem—and that's what sticks with me every time I hear the phrase.

Somewhere along the way, we've started thinking about skincare as something that exists to support makeup rather than something that exists to support our skin.

As a Clinique Consultant, I see this every day.

💄 People will spend 45 minutes trying to find the perfect foundation shade and 30 seconds thinking about their skincare routine.

💄 They'll ask me which foundation will make their skin look healthy while skipping the products that actually help their skin become healthier.

💄 They'll spend money covering dehydration, dullness, and irritation instead of addressing the underlying causes.

I get it.

Makeup gives immediate results.

Skincare requires consistency and patience.

✨ Skincare is about caring for the skin you live in every day.

✨ Makeup is about the look you create on top of it.

And as magical as makeup can be, makeup does not miraculously overcome poor skincare habits.

One of the biggest mindset shifts I wish more people would make is this:

👉 Your skincare routine should exist independently of your makeup routine.

If you wear makeup every day, moisturize.

If you never wear makeup, moisturize.

If you're staying home all weekend, moisturize.

The moisturizer's job doesn't change based on whether you're putting on foundation afterward.

🎯 The goal isn't to create skin that looks healthy once it's covered.

🎯 The goal is to create skin that looks healthy before the makeup ever touches it.

And that's why this little phrase bothers me so much.

Not because the wording is technically wrong.

But because it reflects how many of us have been taught to think about skincare in the first place...
..and then we wonder why we can't find a foundation that lives up to the promises on the label.
