One of the biggest misconceptions about going darker is thinking you can just apply a darker color and get the result you want. There’s actually a lot of science behind it!

A good rule of thumb: if you’re going 2 or more levels darker, you typically need to fill first.

Why? Whatever was removed when the hair was lightened needs to be put back in. Filling creates the foundation needed for rich, dimensional, long-lasting color instead of a result that looks flat or fades too quickly.
