This is the part of the kratom debate nobody seems interested in talking about.

Government officials, especially at the state level, increasingly describe mitragynine and kratom products as a public-health threat worthy of bans and severe restrictions.

(Alcohol is fine though.)

Meanwhile, pharmaceutical researchers are taking mitragynine seriously enough to chemically modify it and develop it as a next-generation opioid pain medication.

Apparently the molecule has no legitimate medical value when consumers use it.

But if you alter it, patent it, and run it through the pharmaceutical system, suddenly its pharmacology becomes promising.

Meet KUR-101.

KUR-101 is an investigational drug based on mitragynine, the primary active alkaloid in kratom.

Researchers chemically modified mitragynine through deuteration, replacing selected hydrogen atoms with deuterium in an effort to change how the compound is metabolized.

The goal is to preserve strong analgesic effects while potentially reducing some of the problems associated with traditional opioids, including respiratory depression, euphoria, dependence, and other side effects.

In other words, the same pharmacology being treated as dangerous and disposable in the public kratom debate is interesting enough to pharmaceutical researchers that they are trying to turn it into a prescription pain medication.

KUR-101 is not kratom.

It is a pharmaceutical drug candidate built from mitragynine.

And that is exactly the point.

When ordinary people use mitragynine, politicians call it a public-health threat.

When pharmaceutical researchers modify it, patent it, study it, and potentially sell it as medicine, it becomes innovation.

That double standard is becoming hard to ignore.
