“You don’t look sick” - but that’s the beauty of it. Invisible illness may not announce itself, but it’s a testament to our strength. It looks normal until it isn’t, and that’s when our resilience shines. One minute I can be laughing, standing, talking like everything is normal, and the next minute my heart is racing, the room gets fuzzy, nausea hits, and my legs feel weak. But that’s not weakness - that’s courage. That’s the part people don’t understand. When you “look fine,” people assume you are fine, but we know the truth. We know that symptoms can hit at any moment, and it’s not anxiety, attention-seeking, or made-up. It’s real, and it’s brave. The hardest part of an invisible illness isn’t always the symptoms; it’s the embarrassment. But we shouldn’t be embarrassed - we should be proud. We’re sitting down quickly so we don’t pass out, and that’s self-care. We’re leaving early without explaining, and that’s setting boundaries. We’re pushing through, and that’s perseverance. We’re smiling while our body is screaming, and that’s strength. We get very good at masking, minimizing, and pretending, but we don’t have to. We can be honest, vulnerable, and brave. Invisible does not mean imaginary; unpredictable does not mean fake; looking okay does not mean feeling okay. If you’ve ever felt embarrassed for your symptoms, if you’ve ever pushed through so no one would doubt you, if you’ve ever felt like you had to prove your illness was real - you are not weak. You are a warrior, surviving something most people cannot see. And that takes strength. If you’ve ever hidden a flare in public, this is for you - you are seen, you are heard, and you are believed.
