Originating in the mid-twentieth century, Konpa (often spelled compas, kompa, or kompa direkt) is a vibrant, jazz-infused genre of dance music born in Haiti.
It’s roots trace back to méringue de salon, a graceful, string-based style popularized by pioneers Nemours Jean-Baptiste, Webert Sicot, and Kreutzer Duroseau through their band, Conjunto International. Together, they created a sound marked by A Steady, Driving Rhythm (to get people dancing), Rich Brass & Guitars, Melodic Improvisation (giving its jazz-like spirit).
At the core of this sound is the tanbou drum, a traditional Haitian instrument whose insistent beat resonates across countless Latin and Caribbean music traditions.
🇭🇹
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Konpa’s propulsive rhythm traveled far beyond Haiti’s shores, inspiring musicians across the globe to put their own spin on its core sound:
The Caribbean: Webert Sicot introduced cadence rampa (or kadans), which helped spark cadence-lypso in the Dominican Republic—a fusion of konpa and calypso perfected by the legendary band Exile One.
The French Caribbean: By layering funk, rock, and jazz over Konpa’s structural foundation, bands like Kassav’ birthed Zouk, turning it into a worldwide phenomenon.
Africa & South America: Konpa’s heartbeat traveled across the Atlantic, inspiring Cape Verde’s 🇨🇻 coladeira and paving the way for kizomba, a slower, sensual derivative that captured hearts from Angola 🇦🇴 to Brazil.🇧🇷
What began as a local heartbeat in Port-au-Prince eventually echoed across oceans.
In sharing its irresistible rhythm with the world, Konpa didn’t just carry a genre across borders—it brought the vibrant soul of 🇭🇹 Haiti to every corner of the globe 🌎.
