What Makes A Great Shear? ✂️

A great shear isn’t defined by price alone.

It’s the combination of quality steel, proper heat treatment, precision manufacturing, blade design, balance, and skilled finishing that determines how a shear actually performs in your hand.

But there’s one more important factor — the right fit for you.

A great shear should match your cutting technique, feel comfortable in your hand, and perform consistently throughout a busy day.

The most expensive shear isn’t always the best shear.

The best shear is the one that feels right, cuts the way you want, and keeps doing it day after day.

Most stylists don’t notice their shears getting dull all at once. It usually happens gradually.

You may start noticing that the hair pushes away from the blade instead of cutting cleanly. The tips may fold or pull the hair. You might need a little more pressure with your hand, or find yourself going over the same section twice.

Those are often the first signs that your shears need attention.

The photo in this post shows an actual shear edge under a digital microscope before and after sharpening. The difference is easy to see when magnified, but during a busy day behind the chair, the change can be subtle.

One of the biggest mistakes is waiting until the shears barely cut.

A dull or damaged edge doesn't just make cutting more difficult. It can change how the shear feels in your hand and make precision work harder than it needs to be. And when you compensate by using more pressure, you're working harder with every cut.

There isn't one sharpening schedule that's right for every stylist or barber. Someone doing 15–20 cuts a day will put very different wear on their shears than someone using the same pair only a few times a week. Cutting technique, hair type, blade style, and how many shears you rotate also make a difference.

So rather than sharpening strictly by the calendar, pay attention to how your shears are cutting.

If they start pushing hair, folding at the tips, pulling, or simply don't feel as effortless as they used to, it may be time to have the edge checked.

Your hands usually notice the difference before your eyes do.
