When my client was diagnosed with breast cancer, she gave herself a goal: to have her ar**las restored by her birthday. I was able to squeeze her in last minute at the end of my day, and we stayed together until almost 9 PM creating something that was so much more than a tattoo. She chose beautiful heart-shaped 3D ar**las that so perfectly matched her personality. I’ve had so many meaningful moments throughout my career, but this was the first time a client has teared up when looking back on her journey and realizing she achieved her birthday goal. It’s truly an unforgettable moment. This work isn’t simply about recreating what was once there. It’s about choice after so much was out of your control. It’s about looking in the mirror and recognizing a little more of yourself again. It’s about closing one chapter and getting to decide how the next one begins. The past several weeks have been quite a ride—diagnosed with Stage 0 melanoma in situ, navigating breast masses (thankfully benign!), and being in the care of Coastal Dermatology, Coastal Surgical Specialists, and North Beach Plastic Surgery.
