🌸 Understanding Oncology Massage & Breast Cancer Care

Navigating a breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery takes an incredible toll on the body and mind. While massage is often thought of as purely for relaxation, oncology massage is a specialized, highly customized form of care designed to safely support individuals touched by cancer.

Whether someone is currently undergoing treatment or is years into survivorship, here is what you need to know about how oncology massage helps:

Tailored to Your Journey: Unlike a standard massage, an oncology-trained therapist adapts pressure, positioning, and techniques based on medical history, active treatments (like chemotherapy or radiation), surgeries, and lymph node status.

Managing Symptoms & Side Effects: It can help alleviate common challenges like fatigue, neuropathy, anxiety, insomnia, and muscle stiffness.

Gentle Lymphatic Support: Special techniques can help reduce post-surgical swelling and lymphedema risks when performed by a certified specialist.

Reconnecting with the Body: Cancer treatment can make patients feel disconnected from their bodies. Safe, compassionate touch offers a comforting space to rest, heal, and breathe.

If you or a loved one are navigating breast cancer, always look for a therapist who holds a clinical oncology massage certification to ensure safe, expert care.

💥 Low Back Pain? The secret might NOT be in your lower back!

Ever feel like your lower back is stuck, aching, or constant tension is holding you back? Often, the root cause isn't actually in your back muscles at all—it’s coming from your hips, glutes, and deep pelvic stabilizers!

Here is how three key muscles team up to pull your back out of whack—and how bodywork helps reset them:

1. The Psoas (The Deep Hip Flexor)

The Culprit: The psoas connects your lower spine directly to your thigh bone. When you sit for long periods, drive, or work on your feet, it shortens and tightens.

How it causes back pain: A tight psoas pulls your lumbar spine forward and down, creating an excessive arch (lordosis) that strains your lower back 24/7.

How Bodywork Helps: Deep, targeted release of the psoas restores natural length to your hip flexors, instantly removing the forward pull on your lumbar spine.

2. Gluteus Medius (The Side Hip Stabilizer)

The Culprit: Located on the side of your hip, this muscle stabilizes your pelvis every time you stand, walk, or balance on one leg.

How it causes back pain: When it becomes weak, fatigued, or full of trigger points, your pelvis tilts unevenly. Your lower back muscles then overwork to keep you upright, leading to persistent lower back tightness.

How Bodywork Helps: Trigger point therapy and targeted glute work release stubborn knots, balance pelvic alignment, and take the heavy lifting off your lower back.

3. Piriformis (The Deep Rotator)

The Culprit: Tucked deep under your glute max, the piriformis sits right over (and sometimes wraps around) the sciatic nerve.

How it causes back pain: When tight, it creates deep hip aching and can compress the sciatic nerve, causing radiating pain into your lower back, buttocks, or leg.

How Bodywork Helps: Deep tissue techniques, cross-fiber friction, and gentle stretching relax this deep rotator, relieving nerve pressure and opening up pelvic movement.

🌿 Why Target All Three?

When we address the Psoas, Glute Medius, and Piriformis together, we unlock the pelvis from the front, side, and back. This allows your lower back to finally relax, align, and heal!
