Apparently World Su***de Prevention Day was yesterday, and I missed it. But this is too important to me to wait another year to say something.
Research estimates that roughly half of people with BPD and about one-third of people with bipolar disorder will attempt su***de at some point in their lives. These aren't just statistics. They're people and I'm one of the people who knows what it feels like to struggle with suicidal thoughts. I know what it feels like when your mind convinces you that there is no way out, even when people around you love you deeply.
💜 I'd like to take a moment to remember those who lost their lives due to su***de and everyone affected by their loss. And also to applaud those who have survived. Including myself. I'm proud of you. I'm encouraged by you. I celebrate you. 💜
If you’re in a dark place right now, please tell somebody. Even if you don’t know what to say. Even if all you can manage is, “I’m not okay.” Let somebody sit beside you in it. Let somebody help you find the next step. You can even message ME!
And if someone tells you they’re struggling, take them seriously. You don’t have to know the perfect thing to say. You don’t have to fix them. Listen. Stay. Help them get connected to someone who can help.
