An update from Ray, what happens next at Koru Touch, and a request for a little light on Monday.

Dear Koru Touch family,

Life has a remarkable way of changing the plan.

On Tuesday, I was doing something completely ordinary: helping a longtime client and friend with a troublesome television remote. As I was leaving, I tripped on the sidewalk and had a very significant fall onto my right side.

A few seconds later, life looked rather different.

I spent the remainder of Tuesday and much of the night in the emergency department while the extent of my injuries gradually became clear. I fractured the proximal humerus at my right shoulder and sustained a significantly displaced fracture of the olecranon at my elbow. The elbow joint itself was also knocked out of alignment, requiring sedation and a closed reduction before my arm could be immobilized.

There was one particularly welcome piece of news. The shoulder itself remained in its socket.

Many of you know that this is the same shoulder that was extensively reconstructed at Duke approximately 20 years ago, so I was enormously grateful to learn that the previous reconstruction had held through such a substantial impact. At this point, the shoulder fracture is expected to heal without surgery.

The elbow, however, requires surgical repair.

On Monday, August 31, Dr. Christopher Tuohy will perform an open reduction and internal fixation of my right olecranon at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Davie Medical Center. I am scheduled to arrive at 11:30 a.m., with surgery to follow later that day. The procedure itself is expected to take approximately two hours, and if everything goes according to plan, I should be able to come home afterward.

What this means for my clients

For the time being, I am taking a medical leave from hairdressing and Colorpuncture.

Although I am fortunate to be left-handed and this is my right arm, anyone who has watched me work knows that neither hairdressing nor Colorpuncture is particularly interested in becoming a one-armed profession.

I don’t yet know exactly when I will return.

Rather than continually moving appointments farther into the future, we have taken my appointment availability offline while we learn what surgery, healing and rehabilitation are going to require.

For those of you whose appointments are being canceled, you have not lost your place with me. I fully intend to return to the work I love.

At the same time, I recognize that hair continues to grow whether one’s hairdresser has broken his elbow or not.

Many of you have already asked me, “Who should I see?”

For some clients, I have specific thoughts and am addressing those individually. For everyone else, I don’t want to casually hand you a name simply because I feel obligated to produce one.

Please go to the person who calls to you. Ask friends whose hair you admire. Look around. Trust your instincts. If someone feels like the right person to care for you during this intermission, go see them.

You are not cheating on me. 😂

After decades together, I think our relationships can survive another hairdresser touching your head.

And yes, realistically, many of you will probably need to see someone else for a while. My hope is simply that you find someone talented and kind who takes good care of you until I can welcome you back into my chair.

Koru Touch is still here

There is another piece of this that I don’t want to get lost.

My medical leave does not mean that you have to put your own self-care on hold.

Greg is continuing his work at Koru Touch.

For those of you who have been receiving facial work from me, Greg is completely capable of performing those treatments. He is a licensed massage and bodywork therapist and esthetician, and he brings his own extraordinary hands and decades of experience to that work.

He has also been trained to incorporate elements of Colorpuncture into his treatments.

It won’t be a replacement for a full Colorpuncture session with me, nor would I want to pretend that it is. But light and color can absolutely become part of the care he offers when appropriate.

So if you had time carved out on your calendar to come to Koru Touch and suddenly find that your appointment with me has disappeared, perhaps don’t automatically give that time back to the rest of the world.

You might still come through our door.

Have a facial. Have a massage. Rest on a treatment table. Let someone take care of you for a change.

I am apparently being given an intensive course in that last one myself.

Greg and I would both love for Koru Touch to remain a place where you can exhale, receive and take care of yourself while I heal.

A request for Monday

Koru Touch has always been home to an extraordinary collection of healers, intuitives, physicians, nurses, therapists, bodyworkers, lightworkers, meditators, Reiki practitioners, Colorpuncture people and wonderfully loving humans of every description.

So I would like to ask something of you.

Beginning around noon on Monday, August 31, if I cross your mind, please send some of that goodness in our direction.

There is no need to watch the clock or try to catch the precise moment surgery begins. Hospital schedules have their own relationship with time.

Send light. Prayer. Color. Reiki. Sound. Loving intention. Peaceful thoughts. Or simply stop for a moment and hold us in your heart.

Please include Greg and our family, who are walking through this with me.

And I would especially love for you to include Dr. Christopher Tuohy and the entire surgical team.

Clear minds. Steady hands. Good judgment. Peaceful hearts. And a beautifully uneventful day in the operating room.

Rather than trying to direct the outcome, my intention is simply to surround that room with clarity, wisdom, compassion and love, and then allow the people who have trained for this work to do it beautifully.

And to my surprisingly substantial collection of physician, nurse, hospital administrator, therapist and other medical clients:

If any of you happen to be having dinner with Dr. Tuohy Sunday night, please send him home early. No second bottle of wine. I would like my surgeon well rested Monday morning. 😂

The amount of love that has reached Greg and me in only a few days has been extraordinary.

People have brought food, cared for our dogs, checked on Greg, helped us navigate the medical system, offered professional expertise, sent prayers and healing work, and simply reminded us that we are surrounded by an extraordinary community.

I have spent much of my life thinking about healing as something larger than fixing what is broken.

Healing asks us to listen.

It asks us to become present to what is actually happening rather than what we thought was supposed to happen.

And sometimes it asks the person accustomed to providing the care to lie down, be quiet and receive some.

Apparently, this particular lesson has arrived with plates and screws.

So I am listening.

Koru Touch remains very much alive. Greg is here. I am still here, albeit temporarily accessorized with an impressive amount of orthopedic material.

Thank you for giving me the space to heal properly. Thank you for caring for Greg as well as for me. Thank you for continuing to support Koru Touch. And thank you for being part of this strange, beautiful community we have built together over so many years.

I fully intend to return.

For now, I am going to practice what I have spent so many years asking others to do:

Trust the body.
Accept the help.
Allow the healing.

This summer has also brought one of the greatest professional honors of my career.

For twenty-six years, when people have asked why I became a massage therapist, my answer has never changed.
