There are common causes of alopecia, such as stress, genetics, and aging. However, there is also a disorder called Trichotillomania, also known as hair-pulling disorder, where an individual experiences an uncontrollable urge to pull out their own hair.
People with hair-pulling disorder may pull hair from their scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or p***c area, either a few hairs at a time or one strand at a time. Although pulling hair can initially cause a brief feeling of positive emotion, attempts to stop usually fail.
This disorder can be treated with various therapies and medications, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), comprehensive behavior therapy (ComB), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Additionally, antidepressants and other medications have been shown to reduce the severity of trichotillomania in controlled studies. 🧠💊
