How to make monogamy work.

Monogamy is a beautiful idea: being committed exclusively to one partner for your entire life.

Of course we all have different opinions about monogamy, and I'm definitely not here to say that it's wrong or that it can’t work; quite the contrary (if done consciously).

However, one of the reasons, in my opinion, that monogamy tends to fail and doesn’t seem to work very well has to do with the influence of Romanticism which has become more predominant in the last decade. In today’s culture, we attach so many imaginary (and often unrealistic) romantic ideas and expectations to monogamy that are simply impossible to match. One of those ideas that we’ve taken on as a society is that s*x is the ultimate expression of love. From this point of view, if one is to have s*x with anybody besides their partner, it necessarily means that they no longer love their partner.

And it doesn’t just apply to having s*x with someone else. Even just having s*xual attraction to another person is seen as a sign of unfaithfulness and a lack of so called “love” for your partner.

Can you see how this is an impossible expectation to uphold, that is destined to lead to failure?

Feeling attracted to other people is inevitable and it should definitely not be used as a measure for our “love” or “commitment” to our partner. Even the most committed, loving, & caring partner will at some point, even if just for a moment, feel s*xual attraction towards someone else. And this is natural. This is normal. This is healthy. & This is most definitely NOT a reason to throw the entire relationship out of the window and demonize the other or assuming they don’t love us.

Another alarming concept is emotional monogamy. In so many movies when the husband or wife confesses or is caught having s*x with another person, their partner is angry & hurt but is somehow able to forgive and move on. All until the next question comes: do you love him/her?

Somehow as a culture we have taken on the idea that having feeling towards other people diminishes our love to our partner. That love is finite. That is can “be taken away”. This is, in my opinion, extremely unhealthy and even harmful. The idea that its not ok to feel connected, warm, and/or loving feelings towards anyone besides our partner is going against our human nature. As human beings we are social animals and our very survival depends on our social bonds and physical contact.

I believe that if we want to have healthy and long-lasting s*xually exclusive/monogamous relationship, we need to be honest with each other about the things which will evidently come up: Sexual desires, fantasies, and all kind of dreams & hopes that were not there when you first met.

To be able to share and express ourselves authentically with our partner and know that we are safe and will not be shamed will allow for more honesty, more connection, and ultimately more fulfilling and long lasting (s*xually) exclusive relationships.

WHAT IS A TA***IC RELATIONSHIP?

A ta***ic relationship is not about being all “love and light” or outwardly spiritual. It doesn’t matter how you dress, if you light incense every day, or if you greet each other saying “namaste”.

A ta***ic relationship is about how you treat your partner in everyday life.


It’s about how you react when s**t hits the fan and you get triggered.

It’s about how honestly you take responsibility for your emotions.

It’s about how consciously you communicate your frustrations.

It’s about how often you're willing to fully show up in your vulnerability.

It’s about how passionate you are about inspiring each other to go deeper into the Heart of God.
