Patricia and Keith Withill met at the Clarendon pub in Hull in April 1966, where Patricia worked part-time as a barmaid. At just 4ft 10, she stood on a crate to pour pints, and Keith, three years older, teased her by calling her Shorty.
It was a whirlwind romance. They married at St Albans Church that September, just five months later, and built their life in North Bransholme, where they have lived for fifty years. Keith drove Stagecoach buses for twenty-five years while Patricia served school meals for twenty-eight.
Now the parents of three sons, with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, they celebrated sixty years together with a family gathering at home on September 17. Their secret is simple: talk to each other, and never go to bed without saying goodnight.

Alastair Cass, 40, from Devon, stormed out of his house in frustration after his beloved Arsenal were beaten 3-0 by Brighton, and stepped outside just in time to hear faint cries for help from the valley behind his home.
Following the sound on his quad bike, he found Sallie trapped chest-deep in mud in a ditch, where she had been stuck for four hours. He fetched rope and planks, kept her secure and guided emergency crews down to her until she was finally freed.
Sallie later sent him a thank you card saying she had never been so happy to see another human being, and joking that Arsenal being rubbish at football helped save her life that day.

Glasgow singer Roisin McCarney, who starred on The Voice in 2024, has beaten skin cancer for the second time. First diagnosed in 2020 after finding a mole on her back, she faced surgery to remove tumours and lymph nodes when the cancer returned four years later.
This month she rang the bell at the Beatson in Glasgow to mark the end of treatment, announcing her remission era to fans. The same day, she released Don't Take My Baby, a piano ballad written while she waited for scan results.
Roisin now warns others about the dangers of sunbeds, which doctors believe ignited her cancer, and credits music with saving her through the darkest moments. She says those who feel they cannot go on can, and it will be ok.

Dave Wichman, 92, and Jackie Wichman, 82, both widowed, met at The Westbury Senior Living in Columbia, Missouri, where they connected through Bible study, church and community events, and fell in love within just a few weeks.
Dave proposed at Jackie's apartment on 5 February, kneeling before her as she answered yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Staff helped plan the wedding in about two weeks, decorating the dining room with a pink and gold balloon arch.
Family and friends cheered their first kiss as husband and wife on 28 February 2026. The newlyweds planned to move into a larger apartment together, proof that love can bloom again at any age.

Glyn Davies, 63, from Harworth, Nottinghamshire, was diagnosed in January 2023 with ANCA vasculitis, a rare disorder that attacked his organs. A quick hospital visit became a three-month stay, and after twelve gruelling months on dialysis, he joined the transplant waiting list.
His wife Claire was tested along with other family members and, astonishingly, proved a perfect match, beating odds of twenty-two million to one. The couple, together nineteen years, recovered in adjoining rooms after their surgery on February 13.
Hours after the operation, Claire saw colour return to Glyn's face and brighter eyes, and both cried happy tears. Now recovered and playing golf again, Glyn will compete at the Transplant Games, while Claire jokes she loves him with all her kidney.

Davide-Daniel Tiblea, now 13, was just 12 when an e-scooter collision in West Denton, Newcastle, in March 2026 left him with a fractured skull and a severe traumatic brain injury. North East Ambulance Service crews reached him within three minutes and took him to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
At hospital, his family were warned he might not survive. Davide woke from an induced coma, moved through intensive care and rehabilitation, and six months later he is back at school, still recovering and looking firmly to the future.
On 5 October 2026, Davide and his family were reunited with the crews who treated him, to thank them in person. His mother Diana said there were no words to truly thank everyone who helped save their son.

Arturo Sotelo was 14 when headaches and nausea led to a seizure in June 2025, and scans found a golf ball sized brain tumour. The rare craniopharyngioma was meant to grow slowly, yet it doubled by September and doubled again by October, pressing on his optic nerves.
At Seattle Children's, surgeons spent up to sixteen hours removing the tumour through his nostrils, with no incision on his face or head. Arturo went home on December 8, returned to half days at school in January and full days by March.
Today his scans show no sign of the tumour returning, and he is back in full swing with marching band and his beloved saxophone. His family hopes his story gives hope to other young patients facing frightening surgery.

Aerosmith have confirmed two comeback concerts, California, Dream On: Aerosmith and Friends, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on 29 October and 1 November 2026, their first full shows in more than three years.
The band retired from touring in August 2024 after Steven Tyler, now 78, fractured his larynx during a September 2023 show, when doctors said a full recovery from his vocal injury was not possible. After rest and rehabilitation, his vocal cords are now reported to be in great shape.
Tyler teased the return by putting the dates on the Hollywood Bowl marquee himself. Guests across the two nights include Slash, Sammy Hagar, The Black Crowes, Heart, Run-DMC and Billy Idol, with more surprises promised.

Doris and Doug Grant from Aberdeen met as teenagers at a youth club in 1954, where Doug chose keen dancer Doris as his partner. They married in 1956, and just two weeks later Doug left for National Service in Cyprus, where he was named best recruit in his year.
Seventy years on, Doug, 90, and Doris, 88, celebrated their platinum anniversary with a tea party at Renaissance Care's Jesmond Home in Aberdeen, surrounded by family and friends, including their daughters Lorraine and Carol, who say they never heard their parents argue.
Their secret is teamwork. In marriage there is no boss, Doris says, just communication, compromise and shared tasks, agreeing to disagree instead of f!ghting. Doug, who shared the housework for decades, jokes he always ironed his trousers better anyway.

Dr Sanjana Kochhar, a GP from Liverpool, was critically ill in October 2022 when multiple organ failure left her kidneys and liver failing and her lungs filled with fluid. Placed on the urgent transplant list, she received a donor heart four weeks later and went home on Christmas Eve.
The British Heart Foundation has dedicated a living memorial bench to her in Liverpool's Otterspool Park, a reminder of the journey she survived. She wrote to thank her donor's family, later met them, and calls their selfless gift her second chance at life.
In August 2026, almost four years after her transplant, Sanjana and her husband Paul welcomed a baby girl, a moment she once feared she would never see. She shared the joyful news on World Heart Day, saying she is so grateful to her donor.
