Our popular Seasonal Raffle was a wonderful success! 🌿
Thanks to the generosity of our members, an incredible 173 garden-related prizes were up for grabs, with plenty of beautiful plants among them. After some careful inspection by hopeful entrants, the draw began and 173 very happy winners went home with something new for the garden.
Thank you to everyone who donated prizes and helped make the raffle possible.

Winter gardens don't have to be dull.

This month, our CHS members enjoyed a fascinating behind-the-scenes visit to the Coastal Park Material Recycling Facility in Muizenberg.
Guided by Maurice van Blommestein and his team, we explored this impressive R434 million state-of-the-art facility, which plays a vital role in diverting recyclable materials away from landfill and back into the manufacturing cycle.
It was both inspiring and eye-opening to witness the sheer scale of waste generated by just 27,000 households and to learn about the incredible work involved in sorting more than 30 different recyclable materials. The visit highlighted an important reality: recycling only works when there is a market for the recovered materials.
By recovering valuable resources before they reach landfill, facilities like this help extend the lifespan of our landfills, create jobs, save public money, and support a more sustainable future for Cape Town.

After the wind and rain of the last few weeks...who would expect to see an African Humming Bird Moth so busy...collecting nectar from a Pentas...which, as we near mid winter, is still in full flower.
An intriguing insect with its fluffy 'tail' one wonders how fast its wings beat as it the same time it sucks up nectar ... from tubular flowers including basil.

For years we have driven past this old power station near Mossel Bay..watching as it was slowly engulfed in a wild ficus tree.
This year we stopped to take a photo...amazing how the building has withstood the wind and weight of the tree.
