We couldn't always afford the pick n mix, but once a month my granny would take us to the OK in Jones street in Kimberley and we were allowed to pick some of these sweets. The sugared watermelon and the peanut and coconut clusters were always my sweets of choice. You had to scoop and put into the small metal buckets, then they got weighed and paid for. We would also then get a boerewors roll from town before we went back home.

Remember to make memories with your kids, my granny had so little but today I have the best memories of her ... Even those where she hit us with a wet vadoek.
