The first week of July is Corporate Wellness Week which provides a platform to raise awareness of the need to create a healthy work environment. In an unhealthy work environment, there is decreased productivity, higher absenteeism, poor work ethic and lower safety in the workplace. The World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests that “A healthy workplace is one in which workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of all workers and the sustainability of the workplace."
The SAOA encourage its members to take advantage of this opportunity to promote responsible eye care in the workplace, with emphasis placed on ‘digital eye’ symptoms’. While staring at a smart phone, laptop or tablet screen won’t harm your eyes, it can cause ‘digital eye’. Symptoms include sore, itchy or tired eyes; headaches, impaired colour perception; and temporary blurring. These are particularly likely when employees spend long periods of time looking at the screen, when there are reflections on the screen, when the characters are too small, or when there is inadequate contrast.
