🫂 Heritage in every language - including the one we sign

South Africa became the first country in the world to make Sign Language an official language when South African Sign Language (SASL) was recognised as our 12th official language three years ago

This was a powerful moment. For the first time, the language used by hundreds of thousands of Deaf South Africans was given the same constitutional status as Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi, Xitsonga, siSwati, Tshivenda, isiNdebele and English

Psalm 19:3-4 “They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”

🫴 Why this matters

Language is not just words. It carries culture, identity, humour, stories and belonging

🫂 When a language is officially recognised, it means:

- Deaf children have a stronger right to education in their first language

- Access to information, healthcare and justice improves

- The wider community is reminded that communication comes in many forms

🫴 A few things many people don’t know about SASL

- SASL is a complete, natural language with its own grammar and structure - it is not simply “English on the hands”

- It developed locally in South Africa and has regional variations, just like spoken languages

- Facial expression, body movement and space are all essential parts of the language

🤝 Learning even a few basic signs is a meaningful way to show respect and inclusion

This Heritage Month we have 12 specials running, one to honour each of our 12 official languages, including SASL. It is our way of celebrating every form of communication that makes South Africa unique
