The National Inquiry into Gender-Based Violence and Femicide has highlighted systemic accountability failures in the response to GBVF at health facilities.

An investigation by the CRL Commission found that most facilities do not have signed Memoranda of Understanding between SAPS, the NPA and provincial Health Departments to assist GBVF survivors and victims.

The inquiry also heard concerns about gaps in accountability structures and coordination across provinces.

A Nigerian man has been charged with forgery and impersonation after allegedly creating a government agency that authorities say was never established or authorised.

Prosecutors allege Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew had posed as the director-general of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council since 2024. The purported agency reportedly obtained federal office space and secured a $1 million budget allocation for 2026.

Adeyemi has pleaded not guilty to all eight charges. He denies wrongdoing and maintains that the agency was genuine. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 12 October.

The ANC in Parliament says it is not targeting National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola following its submission to Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations of police corruption.

The party argued that Masemola should have exercised his constitutional powers by questioning an instruction from then-Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to freeze Crime Intelligence appointments.

The ANC says its position was about Masemola’s constitutional responsibilities and was not an attack on his integrity. The party also said it has made adverse findings against Mchunu. The committee is continuing its deliberations on its draft report.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has announced a R3.5 billion pipeline of 15 tourism infrastructure projects involving both the public and private sectors.

The projects span accommodation, tourist attractions, heritage spaces, entertainment facilities and other infrastructure. Three of the 15 projects have already secured funding commitments.

The pipeline has grown from eight bankable projects valued at R1 billion presented at the 2025 summit.

Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says there is currently no threat to South Africa’s fuel supply.

Mantashe told the National Assembly that South Africa has crude oil reserves sufficient for about 30 days, while Sasol has adequate coal reserves to support fuel production.

He said the main concern arising from the conflict in the Middle East and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz is the potential impact on fuel prices rather than the availability of fuel.

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court has heard allegations that suspended deputy national police commissioner Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya threatened the father of a 16-year-old girl during his bail application.

An investigating officer testified that Sibiya allegedly called the father after learning that he had opened a criminal case and threatened to “wipe” him and his family out. The state says the alleged threat forms part of its argument that Sibiya could interfere with the investigation or intimidate witnesses.

Sibiya faces five charges, including r**e, trafficking in persons and sexual grooming. He has denied the allegations and provided a different account of how he came into possession of explicit material involving the teenager.

Participants at the National Alcohol Summit are calling for stronger measures to address excessive alcohol consumption and its impact on society.

The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance in South Africa is advocating for higher taxes, restrictions on alcohol advertising and tighter licensing mechanisms.

The summit highlighted concerns about alcohol-related gender-based violence, road fatalities, health problems and the breakdown of family structures.

The Makhado Regional Court in Limpopo has sentenced Zwivhuya Ernest Ramaremela to 30 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Vhatshilele Sikuba.

Ramaremela assaulted and killed Sikuba at his home in Madombidzha village outside Louis Trichardt in February 2026, following an argument at a tavern. He had accused her of flirting with another patron.

The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence, while the case comes amid continued national concern over gender-based violence and femicide.

South Africa has unveiled its first working Digital ID prototype as the Department of Home Affairs moves towards smartphone-based identity verification.

The Digital ID will be linked to the population register and secured through biometric verification. Users will be able to choose what personal information they share when their identity is requested and will be able to see when their data has been accessed.

Home Affairs says the Digital ID will be voluntary and will operate alongside the physical Smart ID card. The department also plans to stop producing green ID books on 31 March 2027, with the books expected to cease being valid identification from 31 March 2028.

The digital wallet is eventually expected to accommodate other Home Affairs credentials, including birth and marriage certificates.
