We were playing a “Did You Know?” game — sharing random facts about The Blend Wellness — and somehow I ran out of facts before she did. She won. 😂
But I think that says a lot about the six months we spent together.
Nomsa came to us through YES Youth’s Youth at Work programme. She came all the way from Alex, had to relocate sites, and she wasn’t even from a beauty therapy background. But she was curious. She was committed. And she genuinely wanted to learn.
And that is one thing I will always have time for: a young person who is hungry for an opportunity.
Over the years, The Blend Wellness has opened its doors to final-year beauty students, interns and young people from different institutions and programmes. They know before they arrive that this is a working business, inside a township mall, with real clients, real expectations and real standards.
I may not be a huge corporation with unlimited resources, but I’ve always believed that you don’t have to wait until you have millions before you can contribute to someone’s development.
You give what you can, with what you have.
Nomsa wasn’t just another person completing six months at the spa. She became part of The Blend. She understood what we were building. She contributed to it. She learnt from us — and we learnt from her too.
That’s the kind of exchange I love.
If a young person walks through these doors willing to learn, my responsibility is that they should leave better than they came — more skilled, more exposed, more confident and with a clearer understanding of the working world.
And Nomsa? She left her own little footprint here. 🤎
I had an amazing six months with you, Nomsa. Thank you for showing up, for being teachable, for caring about the brand and, apparently, for knowing far too many facts about my own business. 😂
This is also what The Blend Wellness was built for.

World Humanitarian Day means something different when your work begins in your own community.
For almost a decade, I have spent countless hours building a wellness brand that ordinary people could believe in and trust. I have had the privilege of training therapists who arrived self-taught, inexperienced or simply needing someone to give them an opportunity. Some stayed. Some left. Some experiences were beautiful; others taught me lessons I will never forget.
I have built while grieving. Built after losing family. Built through financial pressure, mistakes, closed doors and moments when walking away would have been easier.
Representation matters!
Our beauty and wellness industry cannot speak about development while the same voices, faces and institutions continue to define who belongs, who is credible and who gets a seat at the table. Township professionals, young therapists and community-built businesses do not need to be spoken for. We need to be represented.
Humanitarian work is not only what happens during global catastrophe. Humanity is also expressed in the everyday decision to teach, employ, mentor, open a door and leave somebody more capable than you found them.
That has always been part of The Blend.
Today, I honour every person who chooses to serve where they are, with what they have.

At 21, I had a qualification, an idea and the determination to build something of my own.
These 21 photographs hold years of operating from a caravan, setting up a tent outside a township mall, moving between lodges, training while staying in B&Bs and opening at Mall of Thembisa before we could even afford a reception.
That journey grew into The Blend Wellness, The Blend Institute, the Beyond Skin Summit, Dr Smoothi and Impression Nails, etc
None of this happened overnight.
This is the real diary of an Entrepreneur. ❤️

Imagine a beauty and wellness industry where access to consistent care isn’t determined only by how much disposable income you have that month.
My name is Gugulethu Masondo, and for years I have been building towards a vision I call Aesthetics Aid — an advocacy and access model aimed at making professional skincare, aesthetics and wellness more affordable and financially accessible to ordinary South Africans.
This is bigger than selling treatments. I want us to challenge the idea that taking care of yourself must always be a luxury.
We have started with what we can implement today: our Unlimited Facial Club, and The Blend Wellness becoming an approved MediWallet partner, allowing clients another way to finance their treatments.
One day, I want to see a beauty and wellness industry with stronger systems for affordability, access and responsible care.
