GAMALAKHE CHC HOSTS SUCCESSFUL RABIES AWARENESS DAY

Gamalakhe Community Health Centre (CHC) hosted a successful Rabies Awareness Day on 30 September 2026 at MPCC Hall, Qinabout, bringing together community members, health professionals, animal welfare organisations and other stakeholders to raise awareness about rabies prevention and control.
The event attracted more than 100 community members, demonstrating the importance of continued education about rabies and responsible animal ownership.
The programme included presentations on rabies in humans and animals, with health and veterinary representatives educating attendees about the dangers of rabies, how it is transmitted, symptoms to look out for and the importance of seeking medical attention promptly after an animal bite.

A key message shared during the event was the importance of visiting a clinic as soon as possible after being bitten by an animal, as early medical intervention is essential in preventing rabies.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and veterinary services also highlighted the importance of animal welfare, responsible pet ownership and vaccination. As part of the outreach activities, more than 50 animals, including dogs and cats, were vaccinated against rabies.
The event also highlighted the importance of community safety. SAPS participated by sharing information on reporting matters involving animals and community safety, while traditional and community representatives provided messages of support.
Stakeholders involved included Gamalakhe CHC, SPCA, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development/Veterinary Services, SAPS and community leadership. Their participation demonstrated the value of collaboration between the health, veterinary and community sectors in combating rabies.
The event concluded with a message of appreciation to all stakeholders, community members and partners who contributed to its success.
Gamalakhe CHC encourages community members to remain vigilant, ensure that their pets are vaccinated and seek medical attention immediately following an animal bite or suspected exposure to rabies.
