Sometimes, what looks like carelessness is actually a struggle you cannot see 🧠
• ADHD can show up as difficulty staying organised, frequently losing things, acting impulsively, restlessness or struggling to finish tasks.
• Some people, especially those with predominantly inattentive symptoms, may go unnoticed for years.
• These challenges are not a sign of laziness or a lack of effort.
If symptoms affect daily life, work, school or relationships, speaking to a healthcare professional is a good first step.

🧠 ADHD is more than just being easily distracted.
• Have you ever wondered why some people struggle to concentrate, sit still, or manage everyday tasks, even when they are trying their best?
• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, impulse control and activity levels. It looks different in everyone, and it is not simply a matter of trying harder.
This ADHD awareness month, let’s replace judgement with understanding and create space for more compassionate conversations.

🫧 Small habit, big difference!
On Global handwashing day, Dr Sharon reminds us that clean hands are one of the simplest ways to protect our health and prevent the spread of germs 💙
🧼 Wash your hands with soap and water:
* Before preparing or eating food.
* After using the toilet.
* After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.
* When your hands are visibly dirty.
A few seconds of handwashing can make a big difference to your health and the health of those around you.
Spread love, not germs! Let’s make clean hands a daily habit 👐

💚 Sometimes, we know we’re not feeling like ourselves, but we’re not sure when it’s time to ask for help.
It may be worth speaking to someone if you’re experiencing:
• Persistent sadness, anxiety or irritability
• Changes in your sleep or appetite
• Losing interest in things you usually enjoy
• Feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope
• Difficulty managing everyday responsibilities
• Feeling hopeless, isolated or alone
Recognising these signs early can make it easier to access support before things reach a crisis point.
And you don’t need to have a diagnosis to ask for help 🫂
Your GP can listen, help you understand what you’re experiencing, and guide you towards appropriate support and treatment 🎗️
📲 If something doesn’t feel right, book an appointment. Taking the first step can be difficult, but you don’t have to take it alone.

Looking after your mental health doesn’t have to mean making huge changes.
Small, consistent habits can support both your mental and physical wellbeing:
😴 Prioritise good-quality sleep.
🏃 Stay physically active.
🥗 Eat a balanced, nourishing diet.
🧘 Make time to slow down and rest.
🌳 Spend some time outdoors.
📱 Take regular breaks from social media.
🤍 Stay connected with people you trust.
💬 Ask for support when you need it.
You don’t have to do everything perfectly. Start with one small change that feels manageable.
👩⚕️ If you’re finding it difficult to cope or your mental health is affecting your everyday life, speak to your GP.

🧠 Mental health is just as important as physical health.
We all have difficult days, and struggling with your mental health does not mean you are weak or “just need to get over it.”
Mental health awareness helps us recognise when something isn’t right, challenge myths and stigma, and create a space where people feel safe to speak up and seek support 🫂
Remember:
• Your feelings are valid
• It’s okay not to be okay
• Healing is not always linear
• You don’t have to face everything alone
• Asking for help is a sign of strength
Be gentle with yourself, you’re doing the best you can 💙
👩⚕️ If you’re struggling, speak to your GP. You don’t have to wait until things become overwhelming to ask for help.

🎗️ What should you look out for?
Breast cancer doesn’t always cause pain. Signs can include a new lump or thickening, a change in breast size or shape, skin changes, ni**le changes or discharge, or swelling in the breast or armpit 🌸
Not every breast change is cancer, but it’s important to have anything new or unusual checked by a healthcare professional.
Treatment depends on the type and stage of breast cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy or targeted treatments. Your healthcare team will guide you through the options.
💗 If something feels different, book an appointment with Dr. Sharon de Bruyn and let’s get it checked.

October is Breast cancer awareness month 🎗️
Breast cancer happens when abnormal cells in the breast grow and multiply in an uncontrolled way, forming a tumour. While it is most common in women, men can develop breast cancer too 🌸
As GPs, we’re often the first point of contact when something doesn’t feel right. Regular check-ups, knowing what is normal for your breasts, and paying attention to new changes can all help with early detection 💗
👩⚕️ If you notice a change or have concerns about your breast health, don’t ignore it. Speak to your GP.

🌍 Our environment can affect our health more than we realise.
As GPs, we don’t only treat illness - we also help you understand and prevent health risks around you.
Air pollution, extreme heat, unsafe water, poor sanitation and other environmental factors can affect our health, especially for children, older adults and people with certain chronic conditions. 🌱
Small steps matter: stay hydrated, protect yourself from excessive heat and sun, reduce exposure to poor air quality when possible, and keep your surroundings clean and safe.
💚 Speak to your GP if you have concerns about how your environment may be affecting your health.
