WE ARE CHALIMBANA UNIVERSITY WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE ASSOCIATION (CHAU-WASHA) AND WE AIM AT KEEPING IT CLEAN ALWAYS

28/04/2026

Celebrating Kenneth Kaunda Day and honoring the legacy of Zambia's founding father often goes hand-in-hand with community service and the spirit of "One Zambia, One Nation" (Muwowo & Buitendag, 2010).
Organizations like the Chalimbana University Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Association (CHAU-WASHA) embody this spirit by working to improve the quality of life for students and the surrounding community
The efforts of CHAU-WASHA align perfectly with the values of Kenneth Kaunda.
By ensuring that every person has access to basic sanitation and clean water, the association upholds the Zambian Humanism ideal that every human being deserves a life of dignity and health (Kanu, 2022).
Happy Kenneth Kaunda Day! Let’s continue to work together for a cleaner, healthier, and more united Zambia.

Celebrating Global Handwashing Day as Chalimbana University students is a critical investment in your collective health and academic continuity. The most straightforward benefit is protecting your academic focus. Proper hand hygiene is the simplest and most effective defense against the rapid spread of common campus illnesses like the flu, colds, and diarrheal diseases. Fewer sick students translate directly to fewer missed lectures, less disruption to your study schedule, and better concentration on achieving your educational goals.
This initiative is also an essential act of community responsibility within a closely-knit environment. University life involves sharing lecture halls , Rooms and libraries, making it easy for infections to spread quickly. By conscientiously washing your hands, you actively contribute to the health and well-being of the entire student body, including your roommates, classmates, lecturers, and staff, demonstrating a commitment to creating a safer, healthier learning environment for everyone.
Ultimately, observing this day helps to embed lasting healthy habits. It's not just about a single day's event; it’s about reinforcing the importance of correct handwashing technique—washing with soap for the proper duration—and making it an automatic part of your daily routine. These hygiene skills are invaluable, extending their benefits beyond your university years and into your future professional and personal life.

Did you know? 💧
⚠️ 2.2 billion people around the world still lack access to safe drinking water.
⚠️ And in Zambia, many schools continue to face challenges with toilets and hygiene facilities.

These numbers may look discouraging, but to us, they are a motivation of hope and a motivation of change the change we want to see in our schools, communities, and country.

We believe that every challenge is an opportunity, and every obstacle is a chance to rise stronger. 💙

That’s why we, as youth, continue to push for clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene for all. Because the future depends on what we do today.

Good nutrition starts with clean hands.

Through the 1,000 Days SCT Pilot, more families built handwashing stations and started using soap more often.

Mpika led the way with 29% of homes having handwashing stations with soap.

It’s the little habits that protect our children.

Supported through the UN Joint Programme on Social Protection, in partnership with Sida - Styrelsen för Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete, Irish Aid, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Embassy of Switzerland to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe and United Nations in Zambia

🧼 The results from the 1,000 Days in SCT Pilot (2022–2025) are clear: when nutrition and gender are integrated, SCT works.

🚀 To reduce stunting and end malnutrition in Zambia, it’s time to scale what works—expand the improved SCT model, strengthen cross-sector action, and invest in sustainable systems.

📢 The evidence is strong. The moment is now. Let’s act.

Water and sanitation are inextricably linked to climate change, but they have largely been overlooked in national climate plans. Not by Uganda - in 2022, this East African nation was among the few to explicitly include climate priorities on water and sanitation in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the official climate action roadmap each country submits to the United Nations.

Now, Uganda is going a step further: finalizing what is expected to be the world’s first water and sanitation-specific National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
