🚽🧩 POTTY TRAINING!

I’ve had a lot of parents ask for advice about potty training, so I figured this is worth a post! I want this page to be a tool for neurodivergent families, not just a haircut source!

Potty training is HARD. And when you throw sensory & communication differences, transitions, anxiety, or just plain not wanting to into the mix- it can feel like a whole different ball game.

NO judgment here. If your child is 3, 5, 7, 10 or older and still needs pull-ups you are not failing. Every kid is different, and some kids need a LOT more time!

Some tips that you probably already know.

1. Count your wins! If your child wears underwear all day, has actual “accidents” rarely, you’re still wiping them & they sleep in a pull-up. Guess what! They’re still potty trained!!!

2. Try not to have big reactions to accidents. Big reactions rather good or bad are reinforcements! Make it boring & make your reaction when they do go on the potty- not boring!!

3. First & then!! First go potty & then (preferred activity)

4. Learn their language even if there are no words! How do they communicate they have to go potty.

5. Be consistent but don’t ruin your own day! Sometimes they just aren’t showing interest, aren’t ready and it’s scary for them. If it feels like you’re torturing them and yourself- you are not lazy if you try again tomorrow. I get it! Just make sure you ALWAYS try again tomorrow.

6. Believe in the power of “yet” ♾️

Outside of those things. One thing I wanted to share: If you have Medicaid, you may be able to get pull-ups/diapers covered at no cost. Talk to your caseworker & there are also websites online where you can enter your information to see if you qualify for free pull-ups

Lastly, apparently I enjoy torturing parents 😂… I’m sharing this song that helped us. I am SO sorry in advance if this gets stuck in your head. We still refer to this song once in a while when we are talking about going to the bathroom!
