All Natural Handcrafted Soaps & Personal Care Products LaRee DeFreece made our first batch of soap in 2001. Many customers are Herbaria addicts. Louis.

She suffered from dry, sensitive, sun-damaged skin and was fed up with store-bought soaps. Nearly all contained harsh detergents and synthetic fragrance. She set out to craft a gentle, moisturizing, all-natural soap. After much research and numerous experiments, she created the basic recipe all Herbaria soaps are made with today. LaRee gave samples to her friends to try. “Best soap I’ve ever used,

Over two decades ago, LaRee DeFreece developed our first soaps. Of all the varieties she created, this pure, unscented Castile soap is still her favorite. She loves the nourishing, moisturizing addition of extra shea butter and avocado oil.

Diana and LaRee pose here for our 20th-year party in 2022. Diana dressed up in the theme of her favorite LaRee's Scent Free Soap. Simple, classic, and incredibly gentle.

We’re loving the satisfying lineup on the drying shelves today. Our Citrus Oatmeal, Licorice, and Oakmoss loaves and bars accidentally teamed up to create a striking resemblance to the Jamaican flag.

Which scent are you grabbing first?

Coming or going? 🌀 Hard to tell inside Richard Serra’s Joe at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, one of our favorite art pieces in St. Louis.

Ken & Melissa dropped by to see the brilliant 25th-anniversary exhibition, Dialogues & Conversations, curated by Emily Pulitzer herself. You'll recognize some favorites, and oh, and ah over the vastness of her treasures.

The show is a celebration of the Pulitzer turning 25 years old this year, which got us thinking about how our own 25th anniversary will be next year... 🥂

If you haven’t been yet, make sure to head over to Grand Center soon or over this holiday weekend.

"Our family recently adopted a Havanese dog, a walking dust mop, and, unlike Soapy’s seal-like coat, Sugar's hair never stops growing... After her very first haircut, she looked mighty fine, but she reeked from a synthetic fragrance that wouldn't go away for a week." 🐶❌

Once you appreciate the pernicious ubiquity of synthetic fragrance, you'll see it in daily-use products such as detergents, soap, shampoo, and deodorant. When these products contact your skin, they enter your body and bloodstream through your skin—your epidermis, sweat glands, and hair follicles.

Synthetic fragrances are the top cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Often labeled as "fragrance" or "parfum," they potentially hide hundreds of synthetic compounds. Skin can become itchy, have scaly red patches, blisters, or swelling.

Plants have evolved their chemistry over millions of years. They create scents to keep insects and other pests from eating them. People have used these oils for centuries. We have acquired vast knowledge of their properties and safe use.

A French Lavender swirl to start your week. 🌀

As our second best-selling variety, French Lavender doesn’t just smell incredible—the visual swirl is a showstopper.

We achieve this pattern by alternating layers of the natural soap batch with a purple batch colored using natural alkanet root. The natural force of the pour creates the unique swirl design in the mold.

Both parts of the batch are packed with pure lavender essential oil and moisturizing almond oil.

Shown here: our fresh soap loaves resting on the drying racks, ready to be cut down into individual bars.

Congrats, Ella! 🎓🎉

Huge congratulations to our wonderful team member, Ella, for graduating from Saint Louis University this week. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and did so cm laude, which surprises absolutely none of us.

Ella has brought that same high-achieving spirit to everything she does here at Herbaria. While she’ll still be helping us out a little bit during her gap year, she is ultimately preparing to head off to graduate school.

We are going to deeply miss her daily stoic presence—and, of course, her invaluable service of teaching the rest of us all the "cheddar" on the kids' slang. 🧀😉

Don't let mosquitoes ruin your next adventure.

Originally developed at the request of the National Parks service over twenty years ago, our Camper’s Choice soap is a must-have for every hiker, camper, or individual who spends a lot of their day outdoors.

Camper’s Choice contains eight essential oils, the same ones as in our Citronella Mist. The lemony scent comes from citronella, lemongrass, and lemon eucalyptus. Costly catnip essential oil is reported to be ten times stronger than DEET. Lavender, basil, thyme, and patchouli are also reported to repel mosquitoes.

Simply shower before and after a hike or, ideally, anytime you're going into nature so you're not helping attract pests with any other scents in your body wash, perfume, and dryer sheets.
